Fishing isn\u2019t just a way to feed your family, according to a new study by Eckerd College\u2019s Jessie Fly, Ph.D.<\/a>, and No\u00eblle Boucquey<\/a>, Ph.D., it\u2019s also where people can escape the social pressures of home and work.<\/h3>\n[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row type=”full_width_content” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” column_direction=”default” column_direction_tablet=”default” column_direction_phone=”default” scene_position=”center” top_padding=”32″ text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” row_border_radius=”none” row_border_radius_applies=”bg” overflow=”visible” advanced_gradient_angle=”0″ overlay_strength=”0.3″ gradient_direction=”left_to_right” shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none” shape_type=”” gradient_type=”default”][vc_column column_padding=”padding-2-percent” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”right” column_element_direction_desktop=”default” column_element_spacing=”default” desktop_text_alignment=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_backdrop_filter=”none” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” column_position=”default” gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”2\/3″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” animation_type=”default” bg_image_animation=”none” border_type=”simple” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid”][vc_column_text]Published in January\u2019s Wellbeing, Space and Society<\/em><\/a>, a peer-reviewed journal, \u201cFlows of Care in \u2018Third Places\u2019: The Role of Shore Fishing Spaces in Collective Wellbeing\u201d used existing survey research conducted since 2018 in the Tampa Bay area on subsistence fishers and expanded the scope to include more of why they flock to local piers. Fly, an associate professor of anthropology<\/a>, and Boucquey, an associate professor of environmental studies<\/a>, worked together with a student research team to produce a previous study on urban fishers<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI read an article about the concept of \u2018third places\u2019 developed by a sociologist,\u201d Fly says. \u201cIt\u2019s used to describe places that are not home or work where people may go and derive social benefits of community and relaxation. It seemed natural to use this lens when studying fishing spaces.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fly says third places are rapidly disappearing because of privatization of public spaces. In the past, people would congregate at coffee shops, barbershops, malls and other common areas in the community to take part in their social benefits of conversation and camaraderie. In the wake of corporatization and the global pandemic, many of the places are being reimagined to discourage gathering and promote efficiency.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column talk about how they, too, are endangered,\u201d Fly explains. \u201cIt becomes even more important to pay attention to the individual well-being and the collective good these places column_border_style=”solid”][vc_column_text]Fishers interact with people from different cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds in public fishing spaces, according to the study. \u201cSome people go to fish for self-care because they\u2019ve had a hard day and they want to have fun,\u201d Fly says. \u201cYou do see the flows of care going from inward to outward. We\u2019ve observed people caring about other people on the piers and the birds and the water quality.\u201d<\/p>\n

Having established that these sorts of social interactions improve the empathy of individuals, Fly says the next step for her research team will be to examine other third places still in operation to get a clearer picture of what society may be losing.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne of our Ford Scholars did research on women\u2019s experiences in online fishing communities and the sorts of nasty harassment that they received in the virtual spaces,\u201d Fly recalls. \u201cThey did not experience that sort of behavior in person. Social capital builds up when you are standing face to face.
