tablet_width_inherit=&#8221;default&#8221; animation_type=&#8221;default&#8221; bg_image_animation=&#8221;none&#8221; border_type=&#8221;simple&#8221; column_border_width=&#8221;none&#8221; column_border_style=&#8221;solid&#8221;][vc_column_text]LaRuby May \u201997 recently visited as a part of the <a href=\"\/academics\/speaker-series\/\">College Program Series of lectures and events<\/a> to offer students <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eckerd.edu\/news\/blog\/eckerd-college-alumna-transformation\/\">her advice on personal and political transformation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>LaRuby told the student newspaper, <em>The Current<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theonlinecurrent.com\/news\/laruby-may-97-is-eckerd-s-2023-commencement-speaker\/article_dee1fcf4-d547-11ed-b4c1-8f455a4abea6.html\">in an interview about the honor<\/a>, \u201cI am proud to be the first Commencement speaker under <a href=\"\/president\/\">President [Jim] Annarelli<\/a>. Eckerd has a vast array of individuals who aren\u2019t just white men. [At Commencement] Black female students can look up at the podium and see representation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A native of Pensacola, Florida, LaRuby majored in <a href=\"\/human-development\/\">human development<\/a> at Eckerd. She went on to earn a Master of Arts from the George Washington University Graduate School of Education and Human Development and a Juris Doctor from the University of the District of Columbia David A. Clarke School of Law. LaRuby has been admitted to the bar in both Washington, D.C., and Florida.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, she owns and operates her own D.C.-based law firm, <a href=\"https:\/\/mayjung.com\/\">May Jung LLP<\/a>, and a consulting firm, The May Group LLC. She has also previously served as a Ward 8 council member on the D.C. City Council, chair of the D.C. Housing Authority Board of Commissioners, chair of the United Medical Center Board of Commissioners\u2014the only public hospital in D.C\u2014and as the committee co-chair of the ReOpen D.C.
