Each student submitted an abstract to the conference committee for consideration and was selected to travel and represent the College based on the merits of the research. Milo was joined by Maice Clanton, a senior ancient studies student from White Hall, Illinois, and Jackie Bither, a senior ancient studies student from Alameda, attend, this conference\u2014which is mostly professors and advanced Ph.D. students\u2014so it is a big accomplishment for each of them to have been accepted,\u201d says Visiting Assistant Professor our program\u2019s commitment to diversity and inclusion<\/a>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Goyette says the four-day conference drew around 1,000 classicists from the region, and the students presented on two separate panels about women and outsiders in the ancient world.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What she has done is introducing the public to how different people view these representations through time\u2014reception studies. She is doing very reparative work.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The paper began as an assignment in Goyette\u2019s Identity, Race and Ethnicity in the Ancient World course and grew into a fully researched project that Milo hopes to continue to refine for professional publication.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Maice\u2019s paper \u201cWomen\u2019s Economic Participation in Ancient Greece: A Re-examination through Property Records\u201d came to her when Associate Dean for General Education and Associate Professor of Classics Heather Vincent, Ph.D.<\/a>, sent her an email during her summer in Israel. She took up the research for her Ford Scholar research project<\/a> and spent countless hours reviewing the ancient mortgage contract to ascertain what might have happened. Attending the conference has bolstered Milo\u2019s and Maice\u2019s confidence in their paths toward graduate studies in the classics<\/a> and their passion for widening the representation in the field.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cLike everyone else, I came to Eckerd for marine science<\/a>,\u201d Milo says. \u201cWhen I heard that Professor Goyette was teaching a class called Women and Gender in the Ancient World, I dropped Biological Oceanography to take it. The first day in the class I thought, Oh. This is what I want to do.<\/span>
