In his address, Annarelli acknowledged the many achievements of the Class of 2023 and congratulated them in advance for all that is yet to come.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

May \u201997 offered the commencement address. The former D.C. city councilwoman and current attorney and activist, who had served in the Eckerd College Organization of Students<\/a> and the Afro American Society on top of her duties as an athlete and student, took the opportunity to encourage the Class of 2023 to use their privileges to increase access for others and leave a legacy of hope.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe greatest privilege in life is to serve,\u201d May said. \u201cFew will have the opportunity and the chance to serve with resources. The opportunities you have been given to start and complete your journey with a degree from Eckerd College creates a path to resources that impacts the lives of people and families that you will never meet.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Class of 2023 was also the first class to have the College\u2019s newly adopted land acknowledgment<\/a> read as an official part of the ceremony. Cameron Dasher \u201923, an anthropology<\/a>, biology<\/a> and environmental studies<\/a> graduate from Uniontown, Ohio, was selected to read the statement<\/a> in light of his involvement with the committee that had crafted it and sought approval from the Seminole Tribe of Florida.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Two veteran faculty members received awards during the program for their work in and out of the classroom. Professor of Chemistry Polina Maciejczyk, Ph.D.<\/a>, received the Robert A. Alumni LaRuby May \u201997 and Grover Wrenn \u201964<\/a>, an honorary trustee of the College\u2019s Board<\/a>, received honorary doctorates for their commitment and leadership to their alma mater as they work to better the world.<\/span><\/p>\n
