On a regular day, Abiageal Mangum arrives at the Circle in the Square Theatre School<\/a>\u2019s rehearsal spaces at 8 a.m. and heads home to her New York City apartment at 6 p.m.<\/h3>\n[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row type=”full_width_content” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” column_direction=”default” column_direction_tablet=”default” column_direction_phone=”default” scene_position=”center” top_padding=”32″ bottom_padding=”32″ text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” row_border_radius=”none” row_border_radius_applies=”bg” overflow=”visible” advanced_gradient_angle=”0″ overlay_strength=”0.3″ gradient_direction=”left_to_right” shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none” shape_type=”” gradient_type=”default”][vc_column column_padding=”padding-2-percent” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”right” column_element_direction_desktop=”default” column_element_spacing=”default” desktop_text_alignment=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_backdrop_filter=”none” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” column_position=”default” gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”1\/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” animation_type=”default” bg_image_animation=”none” border_type=”simple” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid”][vc_column_text]In between, the newly minted Eckerd College theatre<\/a> graduate from Durham, North Carolina, takes classes training her for the life of a performer and eats a 30-minute lunch.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s worth it to me, personally,\u201d says Abiageal. \u201cIt\u2019s a commitment. This program is full of people committed to being actors and the craft of acting.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her dedication to the craft earned her Eckerd\u2019s first-ever Bachelor of Fine Arts in theatre degree in the College\u2019s 60th Commencement ceremony on May 21.<\/p>\n

Beginning in Fall 2019, students interested in earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in theatre or musical theatre<\/a> could apply to be admitted to the 2+2 BFA program and spend two years getting a liberal arts education at Eckerd and two years receiving conservatory training at New York City\u2019s Circle in the Square\u2014the only conservatory program housed in a Broadway theatre.<\/p>\n

Applicants can start at either institution but must meet the admission and audition requirements of each. The program came into being through the work of Eckerd\u2019s Associate Dean of Faculty (then\u2013Theatre Professor) Jessica Thonen<\/a> and Circle faculty member Sara Louise Lazarus.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row type=”full_width_content” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” column_direction=”default” column_direction_tablet=”default” column_direction_phone=”default” scene_position=”center” top_padding=”32″ text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” row_border_radius=”none” row_border_radius_applies=”bg” overflow=”visible” advanced_gradient_angle=”0″ overlay_strength=”0.3″ gradient_direction=”left_to_right” shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none” shape_type=”” gradient_type=”default”][vc_column column_padding=”padding-2-percent” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”all” column_element_direction_desktop=”default” column_element_spacing=”default” desktop_text_alignment=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_backdrop_filter=”none” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” column_position=”default” el_class=”lg_text” advanced_gradient_angle=”0″ gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”1\/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” animation_type=”default” bg_image_animation=”none” border_type=”simple” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” gradient_type=”default”][vc_column_text]Abiageal had already been at Eckerd a year when the program launched. She\u2019d selected the College after attending a Colleges That Change Lives<\/a> meeting and falling in love with the pet-friendly<\/a>, 188-acre campus by the water.<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row type=”full_width_content” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” column_direction=”default” column_direction_tablet=”default” column_direction_phone=”default” scene_position=”center” top_padding=”32″ bottom_padding=”32″ text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” row_border_radius=”none” row_border_radius_applies=”bg” overflow=”visible” advanced_gradient_angle=”0″ overlay_strength=”0.3″ gradient_direction=”left_to_right” shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none” shape_type=”” gradient_type=”default”][vc_column column_padding=”padding-2-percent” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”right” column_element_direction_desktop=”default” column_element_spacing=”default” desktop_text_alignment=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_backdrop_filter=”none” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” column_position=”default” gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”1\/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” animation_type=”default” bg_image_animation=”none” border_type=”simple” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid”][vc_column_text]\u201cI toured and it was absolutely beautiful,\u201d she recalls. \u201cThe atmosphere and all the nature brought even into the classrooms. It was remarkable.\u201d<\/p>\n

She dove headfirst into theatre with a double major in human development<\/a>. Starring in on-campus productions<\/a> of She Kills Monsters<\/em>, Metamorphoses<\/em><\/a> and As It Is in Heaven<\/em> made her certain of her path.<\/p>\n

The hitch was she wouldn\u2019t be eligible to start the BFA program at Circle until Fall 2021\u2014technically her senior year. The most jarring change was moving from sunny St. Petersburg, Florida, to the towering concrete of New York, she says.<\/p>\n

After a period of adjustment, she fell into the rhythm of long days and longer nights. Classes begat rehearsals, and sandwiched in between were part-time jobs to supplement the cost of living in a big city. She also relied heavily on her Eckerd faculty mentor, Professor of Theatre Cynthia Totten, Ph.D.<\/a>, to keep her on track for graduation.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe was there the second I needed her,\u201d Abiageal says. \u201cShe was always so supportive.\u201d<\/p>\n

In her first semester, the students performed a night of acts where Abiageal was cast in The Children\u2019s Hour<\/em> as Mary Tilford. She had been prepared to learn how to act but was pleasantly surprised to find part of the curriculum focused on how to separate yourself from the work, so you don\u2019t relive trauma for others\u2019 entertainment.<\/p>\n

Being the first Eckerd theatre BFA graduate, she swells with pride at how quickly the program is growing. Four students currently attend the conservatory, and she says the 12 spots allotted for next fall have already filled up.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row type=”full_width_content” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” column_direction=”default” column_direction_tablet=”default” column_direction_phone=”default” scene_position=”center” top_padding=”32″ text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” row_border_radius=”none” row_border_radius_applies=”bg” overflow=”visible” advanced_gradient_angle=”0″ overlay_strength=”0.3″ gradient_direction=”left_to_right” shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none” shape_type=”” gradient_type=”default”][vc_column column_padding=”padding-2-percent” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”all” column_element_direction_desktop=”default” column_element_spacing=”default” desktop_text_alignment=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_backdrop_filter=”none” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” column_position=”default” el_class=”lg_text” advanced_gradient_angle=”0″ gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”1\/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” animation_type=”default” bg_image_animation=”none” border_type=”simple” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” gradient_type=”default”][vc_column_text]\u201cI would say, if you truly love theatre and want to make it your life, this is 100% a wonderful program,\u201d Abiageal says. \u201cLearning general education at Eckerd<\/a> is a great way to get your mind expanded and prepared for the acting intensive. It takes commitment. You are going to learn what acting is. \u201cThere is only one male-identifying person in my year,\u201d Abiageal explains. But she loves the roles. \u201cIt is always fun to play with gender.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAs a whole, the vulnerability you have to have as an actor to try things and fail and explore is amazing. They talk often about bringing yourself to the role.
