He was responsible for steering the College of Charleston\u2019s sailing teams into the same elite waters with powerhouse programs from Harvard, Yale, Stanford and Dartmouth. He transformed his teams into perennial national contenders.<\/p>\n

He has produced 92 ICSA All-Americans among open and women\u2019s skippers and crews, along with 13 ICSA All-Academic honorees. He replaces Caroline Young, who resigned in May after two seasons with the Eckerd Tritons<\/a> to take a similar coaching job at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.<\/p>\n

Cromwell has won at least one ICSA National Championship in each of the six collegiate racing classes with three match race championships, four men\u2019s singlehanded titles, one women\u2019s singlehanded crown, three women\u2019s fleet race championships, six open fleet race championships, and three team race titles. Ward knows the Eckerd sailing programs well, having competed against us for many years, and he knows our potential and the caliber of student-athletes to recruit to excel at Eckerd. We\u2019re looking forward to having Ward as an integral part of the Triton family.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cromwell\u2019s father played a crucial role in his development as a sailor, starting with sailing on Lake Pontchartrain on the shores of New Orleans with members of the historic Southern Yacht Club. \u201cWe would also come to St. Petersburg a lot,\u201d he explains. \u201cAt the time, the St. Petersburg Yacht Club<\/a> had some of the best sailors in the world. During high school I traveled more, around the country and to Europe. I was a crew on doublehanded boats. That\u2019s when I started to really love the sport.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cromwell earned a bachelor\u2019s degree in education from Old Dominion University, where as a senior helm he helped win the ICSA Team Race National Championship. He also was named an honorable mention All-American. He then became a member of the U.S. Sailing Team, competing in the Olympic 470 class from 1999\u20132004.<\/p>\n

After placing third in the Olympic Trials, he moved with his wife, Jennifer, and their two young children to Charleston in 2004. He served as an assistant sailing coach at the College of Charleston for two years before assuming the head coaching role.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row type=”full_width_content” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” column_direction=”default” column_direction_tablet=”default” column_direction_phone=”default” scene_position=”center” top_padding=”16″ bottom_padding=”16″ text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” row_border_radius=”none” row_border_radius_applies=”bg” overflow=”visible” advanced_gradient_angle=”0″ overlay_strength=”0.3″ gradient_direction=”left_to_right” shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none” shape_type=”” gradient_type=”default”][vc_column column_padding=”padding-2-percent” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”all” column_element_direction_desktop=”default” column_element_spacing=”default” desktop_text_alignment=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_backdrop_filter=”none” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” column_position=”default” el_class=”lg_text” advanced_gradient_angle=”0″ gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”1\/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” animation_type=”default” bg_image_animation=”none” border_type=”simple” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” gradient_type=”default”][vc_column_text]\u201cI\u2019ve been competing against him for most of the last 19 years,\u201d says Greg Wilkinson, head sailing coach at Boston College and a member of the ICSA Hall of Fame. \u201cIt\u2019s been a friendly rivalry, but a rivalry for sure. He\u2019s one of the winningest coaches in college sailing history, and I\u2019m certain that\u2019s going to continue at Eckerd.<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row type=”full_width_content” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” column_direction=”default” column_direction_tablet=”default” column_direction_phone=”default” scene_position=”center” top_padding=”32″ text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” row_border_radius=”none” row_border_radius_applies=”bg” overflow=”visible” advanced_gradient_angle=”0″ overlay_strength=”0.3″ gradient_direction=”left_to_right” shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none” shape_type=”” gradient_type=”default”][vc_column column_padding=”padding-2-percent” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”right” column_element_direction_desktop=”default” column_element_spacing=”default” desktop_text_alignment=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_backdrop_filter=”none” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” column_position=”default” gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”1\/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” animation_type=”default” bg_image_animation=”none” border_type=”simple” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid”][vc_column_text]\u201cHe\u2019s extremely good at developing talent and getting that talent to win. He builds a winning culture. Every year the College of Charleston went into the championships expecting to win it, and knowing how to do it.\u201d<\/p>\n

But after nearly two decades, it was time for a change. \u201cI was looking for new challenges,\u201d Cromwell explains. \u201cA different environment.\u201d<\/p>\n

What makes a successful sailing program, he says, has a lot to do with chemistry. \u201cThere are six different disciplines, so it\u2019s hard to get the bodies that can produce the results in each discipline,\u201d he explains. \u201cYou still need consistency to do well. One or two people can make a really big difference. But you need good sailors, and they need to be able to work well together and know each other\u2019s strengths and how to inspire each other. That can be contagious.\u201d<\/p>\n

And that, he adds, can happen at Eckerd College. \u201cWe just have to grow the program right now and get more bodies out there competing,\u201d he says. \u201cThe venue at Eckerd is one of the best in the country<\/a>. Ultimately, I\u2019d like to showcase that more often.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf we can just get the student-athletes in and make a few tweaks \u2026 ultimately we can be competing on the national level. Hopefully, the sailors will remember the relationships they formed throughout their college experience, and the winning will come with the process.\u201d<\/p>\n

That will be no surprise to Yale University Head Sailing Coach Zachary Leonard. \u201cWard Cromwell is an absolutely top-flight coach and a great guy,\u201d Leonard says. \u201cI\u2019ve known Ward for many, many years. He will bring a new level of performance to Eckerd\u2019s sailing program and will be a great asset to your community. Ward knows what it takes to compete for and win national championships.\u201d<\/p>\n

Adds Justin Assad, head sailing coach at Dartmouth College, \u201cWard Cromwell is a proven winner, and this is a major hire for Eckerd College. Ward understands the game at a sophisticated level, yet he has the skill set and coaching experience to bring a team through the fundamental stages of building a program through to the elite level of collegiate sailing. Even more, Ward can keep his finger on the pulse of the team, and he creates an atmosphere that inspires the athletes toward greatness while keeping the tone fun and low-key.
