At an early age, Ryan Lambe, Ph.D., had a good idea of what he wanted to do when he grew up. \u201cWhen I was in the choir in high school, I watched the choir director and said to myself, \u2018That\u2019s what I want to do \u2026\u2019 That ability to elicit sounds from us. It was so magical.<\/h3>\n[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row type=”full_width_content” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” column_direction=”default” column_direction_tablet=”default” column_direction_phone=”default” scene_position=”center” top_padding=”32″ text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” row_border_radius=”none” row_border_radius_applies=”bg” overflow=”visible” advanced_gradient_angle=”0″ overlay_strength=”0.3″ gradient_direction=”left_to_right” shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none” shape_type=”” gradient_type=”default”][vc_column column_padding=”padding-2-percent” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”right” column_element_direction_desktop=”default” column_element_spacing=”default” desktop_text_alignment=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_backdrop_filter=”none” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” column_position=”default” gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”2\/3″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” animation_type=”default” bg_image_animation=”none” border_type=”simple” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid”][vc_column_text]\u201cI saw a violinist and got violin lessons, and that helped me get into other music,\u201d he adds with a chuckle. \u201cBut when you\u2019re spending most of the time during the lesson asking about music history and culture \u2026 they steered me into musicology.\u201d<\/p>\n

His passion for music eventually led him to Eckerd College, where he began teaching this week as an assistant professor of music<\/a>. Among his courses are World Music, American Musical Landscape, and Choral Literature\/Ensemble.<\/p>\n

Lambe earned his Bachelor of Music Education degree at Idaho State University before teaching general and vocal music to underserved public school students in his native New Jersey. \u201cI loved it so much,\u201d he says, \u201cbut dealing with the administration got more and more frustrating. He earned his master\u2019s and doctorate degrees from the University of California, Santa Cruz. His master\u2019s thesis examined queer musical hermeneutics\u2014the study of the methodological principles of interpretation\u2014in American pop and art music, and his dissertation is an ethnographic study of performance and emotion in U.S. queer open mics examined through queer and critical race lenses.<\/p>\n

Eckerd College, he says, had been on his radar awhile. \u201cA couple of years ago I saw a call for the job that Leslie La Barre, DMA<\/a>, assistant professor of music, has now. I learned more about Eckerd, and it just seemed like the ideal job for me.\u201d<\/p>\n

On the performance side, he wants his students to learn that \u201chowever they express themselves is valid and valuable. So much of music in the past was about training musicians to be experts. I want to meet students where they are and help take them where they want to go. Wherever that is.<\/p>\n
