Former Eckerd College athletic director, men\u2019s basketball coach, mentor and friend James R. \u201cCoach Harley was the most caring individual I have ever met. He was a servant leader in every sense of the word. A true gentleman and a fierce competitor. He was a trailblazer, and his impact will be felt by generations of Tritons,\u201d stated Athletic Director Tom Ryan \u201987, who was Coach Harley\u2019s successor.<\/p>\n

Jim Harley is synonymous with Eckerd College and the NCAA Division II<\/a>\u2014having built the foundation of Eckerd Athletics<\/a>, the Sunshine State Conference<\/a> and Division II. He served on the Tritons\u2019 sidelines for 32 years as the head men\u2019s basketball<\/a> coach (1963\u20131996) and spent 39 years as athletic director (1963\u20132002).<\/p>\n

He led the Tritons to three NCAA Championship appearances in 1972\u201373, 1993\u201394 and 1994\u201395, building the Tritons into a powerhouse program.<\/p>\n

He was a two-time SSC Coach of the Year (1982\u201383 and 1991\u201392) and two-time NABC District Coach of the Year. He also coached four All-Americans during his time on the hardwood.<\/p>\n

But his accomplishments off the court are equally, if not more, impressive: He had a nearly perfect graduation rate among his basketball players, he was a pioneer in the creation of the Sunshine State Conference, and he helped break the color barrier in the South.<\/p>\n

Harley recruited Harry \u201cBig Red\u201d Singletary to Florida Presbyterian (now Eckerd) College in 1965. Singletary became the first Black student-athlete to play at a four-year, predominantly white college in the South. But they pushed forward, defying the odds and making history. In 1968, Singletary became the first All-American in Eckerd Athletics\u2019 history.<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row type=”full_width_content” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” column_direction=”default” column_direction_tablet=”default” column_direction_phone=”default” scene_position=”center” top_padding=”32″ text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” row_border_radius=”none” row_border_radius_applies=”bg” overflow=”visible” advanced_gradient_angle=”0″ overlay_strength=”0.3″ gradient_direction=”left_to_right” shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none” shape_type=”” gradient_type=”default”][vc_column column_padding=”padding-2-percent” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”right” column_element_direction_desktop=”default” column_element_spacing=”default” desktop_text_alignment=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_backdrop_filter=”none” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” column_position=”default” gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”1\/2″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” animation_type=”default” bg_image_animation=”none” border_type=”simple” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” column_padding_type=”default” gradient_type=”default”][vc_column_text]Back in the fall of 1967, Jeff Testerman \u201971 was a first-year student at Florida Presbyterian College when Coach Harley asked him to try out for the basketball team. \u201cThey needed bodies,\u201d Testerman recalls. \u201cI played in high school but knew I wasn\u2019t a college caliber player and passed. But we stayed in touch, and I worked closely with Jim on a work scholarship when I was a senior. He and I ran the intramural program.\u201d<\/p>\n

Testerman would go on to a 33-year career at the St. Petersburg\/Tampa Bay Times<\/em><\/a>, where he worked as an investigative reporter and was nominated five times for a Pulitzer Prize. \u201cFor all the time Jim was [a] coach and athletic director, he had an oversized photo of Harry in his office. Harry had chased down an opponent who was trying to make a layup, and the Human Spring\u2014that\u2019s what we called him\u2014had leapt up and pinned the ball above the painted square in the backboard. The caption on the photo was, \u2018Quoth the Raven \u2026\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Harley\u2019s admiration of Singletary went well beyond sports. In 1991, Florida Governor Lawton Chiles<\/a> nominated Singletary to become the first African American to head the Florida Department of Corrections<\/a>. After he had served four years as Florida\u2019s top corrections official, Singletary\u2019s confirmation for four more years was in jeopardy, so Harley stepped in. \u201cI wrote a letter in support of him,\u201d Harley told the Times<\/em> in a 2010 interview. \u201cI remember saying, \u2018Whatever the budget was of the Department of Corrections, you could give it to him in cash and he wouldn\u2019t have taken a dime of it.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

He was inducted into the SSC Hall of Fame in 1993<\/a>.<\/p>\n

During his coaching career, all but two four-year players graduated. As athletic director, he guided the Tritons to 21 NCAA Division II postseason appearances, including a baseball national runner-up finish in 1977.<\/p>\n

His impact on Eckerd is celebrated in numerous ways. He spent time coaching at Miami-Dade Junior College; Georgia Southern College; and Brewton-Parker Junior College, where he was inducted into its Hall of Fame in 1986.<\/p>\n

In 2011, Harley was inducted into the Florida Association of Basketball Coaches \u201cCourt of Legends\u201d Hall of Fame. But he couldn\u2019t be defined by accolades and statistics alone.<\/p>\n

According to Kathy Watson \u201969, Ed.D.\u2014Eckerd College\u2019s professor of education, associate dean of faculty development and special assistant to the president emerita\u2014Harley was known for much more than his signature, always-recognizable crew cut he\u2019d sported since the 1960s. \u201cWhat else never changed about Jim Harley?\u201d she wrote last week in an email to the Eckerd community. \u201cHis commitment to racial and social justice. His Christian faith. His love for his wife and his pride in her work as an artist. His love for the College. His humor. His humility.
