Nicole Schaal recently learned she\u2019s about to take the journey of her lifetime. And it involves a fictional starfish.<\/h3>\n[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row type=”full_width_content” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” column_direction=”default” column_direction_tablet=”default” column_direction_phone=”default” scene_position=”center” top_padding=”32″ bottom_padding=”32″ text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” row_border_radius=”none” row_border_radius_applies=”bg” overflow=”visible” advanced_gradient_angle=”0″ overlay_strength=”0.3″ gradient_direction=”left_to_right” shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none” shape_type=”” gradient_type=”default”][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”right” column_element_direction_desktop=”default” column_element_spacing=”default” desktop_text_alignment=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_backdrop_filter=”none” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” column_position=”default” gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”1\/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” animation_type=”default” bg_image_animation=”none” border_type=”simple” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” column_padding_type=”default” gradient_type=”default”][vc_column_text]A senior marine science<\/a> and environmental studies<\/a> student at Eckerd College, Nicole will leave for Kenya in early September as a member of the Peace Corps. She\u2019ll spend two years and three months in the East African country teaching science, technology, engineering and math to high school\u2013aged children. For the first three months, she will live in Kisumu, on the shores of Lake Victoria, learning local customs and the official language\u2014Swahili. After that, she\u2019ll be living in a village nearby.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m incredibly excited because it\u2019s so life-changing,\u201d Nicole says. \u201cBut I\u2019m also really nervous. I\u2019ll be in a new country, with a new language and none of my support system.\u201d<\/p>\n

Whenever she needs a dose of reassurance, she thinks about her mother, a special education teacher in her hometown of Austin, Texas, and The Starfish Story<\/em>. \u201cMy mom\u2019s job is hard,\u201d Nicole explains. \u201cShe often feels run down at the end of the day. But then she brings up The Starfish Story<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Adapted from a 1969 essay by Loren Eiseley, the tale is about a child tossing starfish into the ocean after they washed ashore during a storm. Starfish, the child knows, must remain in water or they\u2019ll die. A man walks by and asks the child why bother, since there are so many starfish in the ocean. \u201cYou won\u2019t be able to make much of a difference,\u201d the man says. It doesn\u2019t matter where or what I do as long as I\u2019m making an impact. She helped Eckerd marine science professors Shannon Gowans, Ph.D.<\/a>, and Amy Siuda, Ph.D.<\/a>, develop the Remora single-use plastics app<\/a>. She worked with stingrays as a summer intern at the University of South Florida. She conducted research at Eckerd regarding student learning of calculus and is writing a paper to publish the findings. And she was a member of the Eckerd College Search and Rescue Team<\/a> for two and a half years.<\/p>\n

Nicole also is part of the Eckerd College Peace Corps Prep undergraduate certificate program<\/a>, which combines targeted coursework with service-oriented fieldwork and professional development training designed to make participants more competitive when applying for postgraduate Peace Corps volunteer positions. To date, 186 Eckerd graduates have served as Peace Corps volunteers.<\/p>\n

\u201cNicole\u2019s placement in Kenya in the Peace Corps showcases her talent, skills and experiences that she had while at Eckerd,\u201d says Kathleen \u201cKat\u201d Robinson, Ph.D., assistant dean of faculty<\/a> at Eckerd. \u201cShe traveled and studied in Belize, she was part of our EC-SAR Team, and she studied French. Nicole\u2019s well-rounded academic and extracurricular experiences make her, like many of our EPC [Eckerd Peace Corps] students, a solid fit for service.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nicole chose the College, she says, because of its Marine Science Program and smaller classes. \u201cI wanted to be able to meet the teachers and know my peers and build those connections. And I wanted to be out of Texas; Austin was the only place I really knew.\u201d<\/p>\n

She didn\u2019t seriously consider the Peace Corps until she took an environmental studies course with No\u04eblle Boucquey, Ph.D.<\/a>, associate professor of environmental studies<\/a> at Eckerd. \u201cIt changed my life,\u201d Nicole says. \u201cShe taught us about topics, like environmental injustice, that I knew about but had never learned about. How smaller communities are often forgotten, how human perspective is so important, and how we have to think about the people being affected.<\/p>\n
