She took a leap and landed in the world of business for the first time.<\/p>\n<p>Her first customer was an eye-opener. \u201cI realized that not everyone\u2019s room is set up the exact same way,\u201d Julia says with a chuckle. \u201cI showed up to the dorm room with a mop, and the entire room was covered in carpet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Having completed all <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eckerd.edu\/academics\/#gened\">General Education requirements<\/a>, Julia was expecting her last year at Eckerd to be smooth sailing. She dropped a class and picked up Cultivating an Entrepreneurial Mindset, taught by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eckerd.edu\/management\/faculty\/knippen\/\">Associate Professor of Management Jennifer Miner Knippen, Ph.D.<\/a> The course encourages students to utilize fundamental entrepreneurial skills beyond the classroom setting to build their own businesses.<\/p>\n<p>Even though Julia had always had her eyes on the course, \u201cI never thought I would take this class,\u201d she explains. \u201cI knew it existed, but I didn\u2019t really know what I would do with it.\u201d With the realization that this was her last year at Eckerd and a required internship for human development students would keep her busy in spring, this fall was her last chance. So she took the risk and switched.<\/p>\n<p>While the rest of her classmates chose food-related businesses, Julia hesitated. Cooking isn\u2019t her strong suit, and she didn\u2019t have the resources to run such a business efficiently. But what Julia did have the resources\u2014and passion\u2014for was cleaning.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt started this summer. I did a really deep clean of my room using my dad\u2019s shop vacuum,\u201d Julia recalls. \u201cIt was so satisfying, and I thought it could be something I know I can do well.\u201d[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column column_padding=&#8221;no-extra-padding&#8221; And I\u2019m learning how to be productive. It\u2019s very direct,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>Knippen deems that a success. \u201cEven if the student who enrolled goes through the process and finds out what they don\u2019t want to do, it\u2019s meaningful,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>Cultivating an Entrepreneurial Mindset was developed as an introductory class for the <a href=\"\/management\/entrepreneurship-minor\/\">entrepreneurship minor<\/a>, but it routinely draws students from across disciplines looking to challenge themselves. Knippen says the course requires a substantial amount of reading, meeting with local entrepreneurs to learn about their experiences, and practical application. Past successes include the St. Petersburg <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eckerd.edu\/news\/blog\/hot-dog-business-started-on-campus\/\">hot dog pop-up Wiener Beach<\/a> and several art-focused businesses.<\/p>\n<p>It also helped, Julia says, that Knippen sets up \u201cchallenges\u201d for the students to follow.
