The line of people stretched out the door at the Daystar Life Center<\/a> one recent Wednesday afternoon. The Center provides a range of services\u2014including food, clothing, bus passes, rent and utility assistance, and help procuring ID cards. The woman nodded, and Lucrezia backed away, not wanting to step in again unless needed. The woman moved on to a bar of soap, hesitated, and then looked up at Lucrezia.<\/p>\n

A junior psychology<\/a> student from Rome, Italy, Lucrezia comes to Daystar for about three hours nearly every Wednesday. She\u2019s been doing that since early October. She answers questions and hands out mail, but her primary job is a food runner. She takes an order from the counter, walks quickly down a hall to the food pantry, and fills a shopping cart with frozen meat, canned vegetables, bread and other items. All the Eckerd students are really good.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lucrezia is part of a cohort of Eckerd students who make regular trips to volunteer at Daystar. All Eckerd students have an academic requirement to take classes that emphasize the connection between meaningful service and learning through written reflection. Led by Ronald Porter \u201905, Ph.D., director of service learning,<\/a> the students are also required to complete 20 hours of community service at a variety of locations, both in the U.S. and abroad.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think little things we can do for people who are in need is very important,\u201d Lucrezia explains. \u201cEven just listening to someone can be an eye-opening experience. Their lives are very different relative to ours. The clients know they\u2019re being helped, and they\u2019re very grateful.\u201d<\/p>\n

Founded by the late Monsignor John P. McNulty in 1982, Daystar began helping the needy from the basement of St. Mary Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church<\/a> in downtown St. Petersburg. People are being bombarded by bad news these days, and being able to go out and help in some way can shift someone\u2019s energy around. We went to Daystar last year, and we\u2019ll go again in the spring.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Lucrezia, Porter adds, steps fully into her job at the Center. \u201cShe works with the clients at the human level.\u201d<\/p>\n

After two years of playing golf at a West Virginia college, Lucrezia transferred to Eckerd, a private liberal arts<\/a> college. \u201cI always wanted to live in Florida,\u201d she says, \u201cand my golf coach [David Woodrum<\/a>] became Eckerd\u2019s head men\u2019s and women\u2019s golf coach<\/a>. He asked me to come with him. I love it here.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lucrezia did similar volunteer work as a high school student in Rome, helping her develop empathy for those less fortunate. \u201cThe first thing I see is a person in front of me, and I wonder why or how they ended up in their situation,\u201d she says. \u201cLast week I was helping the last client of the day. It was an older lady who wanted a sweatshirt because it was cold outside. She asked for two, and I gave them to her. She was a happy person \u2026 so grateful for what she got.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve got six or seven sweatshirts in my closet. They\u2019re just random clothes. But to people like her \u2026 I also noticed that if people don\u2019t need something, they won\u2019t ask for it. They\u2019ll say they don\u2019t need socks this week. They don\u2019t try to get more stuff, because they know other people around them need it, and they\u2019re trying to help each other.<\/p>\n

\u201cSometimes,\u201d she adds, \u201cI\u2019m tired from studying and practicing golf, and I don\u2019t really want to go to the Center. But once I get there, my whole attitude changes.
