The early morning visits to Outback Key were at times cold, wet and windy. But their work was important\u2014studying three species of imperiled shorebirds: the piping plover, snowy plover and Wilson\u2019s plover. Birds that can fit in your hand, only an estimated 400 snowy plovers and 900 Wilson\u2019s plovers are left in Florida.<\/p>\n

Jayden, who at the time was a senior biology<\/a> and environmental studies<\/a> student at the private liberal arts<\/a> college, and his mentor, Forys, who also is the Richard R. Hallin Professor in Natural Sciences at Eckerd, counted the number of plovers on the island and examined how tide and wind affected their abundance and foraging behavior.<\/p>\n

Then Jayden wrote his biology thesis on their findings. And together, he and Forys assembled their collective research into a paper titled \u201cThe Influence of Tide, Wind, and Habitat on the Abundance and Foraging Rate of Three Species of Imperiled Plovers in Southwest Florida, USA.\u201d\u00a0The paper was published recently<\/a> by the peer-reviewed journal Animals<\/em>.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row type=”full_width_content” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” column_direction=”default” column_direction_tablet=”default” column_direction_phone=”default” gradient_type=”default”][vc_column_text]The project had begun when Jayden and Forys were doing research on Outback Key<\/a> and noticed the rare species of plovers at a high density. \u201cSo we decided to take a closer look,\u201d Forys explains.<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row type=”full_width_content” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” column_border_style=”solid” column_padding_type=”default” gradient_type=”default”][vc_column_text]They found that the large number of plovers \u201cwas likely due to the mudflat habitat that provides ample food, a beach habitat that provides a relatively safe location to roost, and the location of the barrier island, which is surrounded by other good places to forage and rest,\u201d the pair wrote.<\/p>\n

All three species have shown declining populations, and there is little information about them.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo have Dr. Forys\u2019 support and guidance throughout this whole process has meant everything to me,\u201d Jayden adds. \u201cThere were so many technical details she helped me with so we could get to the publication level.<\/p>\n
