Laura Hudson Pollom, Ph.D.<\/a>, explains that it was like bringing together all the ingredients for a fabulous dinner. Pollom, visiting assistant professor of communication at Eckerd College, had taught communication in just about every form\u2014interpersonal, nonverbal, business, intercultural and others\u2014for 18 years at Concordia University Chicago before she arrived at Eckerd last August.<\/h3>\n[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row type=”full_width_content” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” column_direction=”default” column_direction_tablet=”default” column_direction_phone=”default” scene_position=”center” top_padding=”32″ bottom_padding=”32″ text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” row_border_radius=”none” row_border_radius_applies=”bg” overflow=”visible” advanced_gradient_angle=”0″ overlay_strength=”0.3″ gradient_direction=”left_to_right” shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none” shape_type=”” gradient_type=”default”][vc_column column_padding=”padding-2-percent” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”right” column_element_direction_desktop=”default” column_element_spacing=”default” desktop_text_alignment=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_backdrop_filter=”none” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” column_position=”default” gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”2\/3″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” animation_type=”default” bg_image_animation=”none” border_type=”simple” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” column_padding_type=”default” gradient_type=”default”][vc_column_text]I always wanted to take key parts of those courses and combine them,\u201d she says. \u201cAnd I always wanted to teach a Winter Term course. So it seemed like Toasting, Roasting and Boasting would be a perfect fit.\u201d<\/p>\n

The course\u2014which is part of the College\u2019s 2024 Winter Term, Jan. 3\u201326\u2014is sort of a greatest hits version of Pollom\u2019s previous work. \u201cIt\u2019s a compilation of different elements from different communication courses I\u2019ve taught in the past,\u201d she explains. \u201cIt\u2019s about how to present yourself with confidence and speak with charisma.\u201d<\/p>\n

If there is a common thread through this, it\u2019s food. Pollom asked her 13 students to create a three- to five-minute toast\u2014to a hypothetical couple getting married, for instance\u2014and present it in front of one another at Pia\u2019s Trattoria restaurant<\/a> in nearby Gulfport. And about elevator pitches. What would they say if they had one minute to ride an elevator with the boss of their ultimate dream job? You just have to take that first step to talk to them. And not keep your eyes down on your phone.\u201d<\/p>\n

Throughout the term, Pollom worked with the Eckerd College Career Center<\/a> and Nicole Manuel \u201998, the College\u2019s Creative Arts Collegium coordinator and collection manager, to create a grand finale on the final day of class. Students will be seated at a formal networking lunch with professionals, selected by the Center, who work in areas that the students expressed an interest in.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt boils down to giving students the tools to gain the confidence to speak on their feet,\u201d adds Pollom, who will teach fundamentals of communication and nonverbal communication classes<\/a> at Eckerd in the Spring 2024 semester.<\/p>\n

I\u2019d like to help the public understand things they should be caring about. Jadyn Bierman got a pleasant surprise when she took Pollom\u2019s Fundamentals of Oral Communication course last fall. \u201cI was really afraid of public speaking,\u201d explains Jadyn, a junior communication and environmental studies<\/a> student from Neosho, Wisconsin. \u201cBut being in her class \u2026 there was a magnetic vibe. She made everybody so comfortable. I thought I would dread that class, but it turned out to be the one class I looked forward to the most.\u201d<\/p>\n

That\u2019s why Jadyn signed up for Toasting, Roasting and Boasting. \u201cIt will help me with everything from family events to the workplace,\u201d she says. \u201cJust knowing I feel confident enough to take charge and effectively speak to a large group of people.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jadyn adds that she and many of her peers missed key opportunities to hone their communication skills because of the pandemic. \u201cI was a senior in high school in 2020, and so many projects we had were presentation heavy. But we had to do it via Zoom. It wasn\u2019t the same experience.<\/p>\n
