On March 2, a group of family, friends, supporters and athletes gathered to dedicate the new facility during the College\u2019s Reunion Weekend<\/a>. The way the project came to be was, like volleyball, a team effort. But the linchpin was Jon Baker himself, the unofficial father of beach volleyball at Eckerd\u2014an Atlanta financial advisor who died from cancer in 2021 before the idea of the complex had been discussed.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe wish Jon was here today to see this beautiful facility,\u201d Annarelli said. \u201cBut his memory lives on in this complex and the passion of the athletes who will compete here.\u201d<\/p>\n

Annarelli noted that it all started with Trustee Sue McDermott \u201989, who attended a beach volleyball tournament at Stanford University and wondered why Eckerd, given its beachfront location and beautiful campus, wasn\u2019t hosting similar contests.<\/p>\n

The answer: too few courts that lacked necessary amenities. He reached out to Jon\u2019s widow, Pam Baker \u201993, and sister, Jessica Baker \u201993\u2014who, as well as being in-laws, had been Eckerd roommates.<\/p>\n

Over the ensuing months, alongside Eckerd Athletics<\/a> and Advancement<\/a> staff, Seeley, Pam Baker and Jessica Baker reached out to friends, classmates and family to inch ever closer to the project\u2019s nearly $600,000 goal.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople pitched in for this \u2026 because of what Jon brought to volleyball and his energy,\u201d Seeley said.<\/p>\n

Over 30 years ago, Jon Baker built a men\u2019s club volleyball team from the ground up, practicing with his teammates in the gym at 11:30 at night because that was the available time allotted to them.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe wasn\u2019t just a great player; he was a communicator,\u201d Seeley said. \u201cHe was inspiring\u2014he inspired us to play.\u201d<\/p>\n

Volleyball was a last resort when he didn\u2019t make the waterskiing team.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe learned not just the sport but how to coach other people,\u201d his sister said. \u201cEckerd is a school that allowed for that to happen. It gave us the space and the opportunity to try new things.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jon and Pam Baker\u2019s daughter, Sabrina \u201cBeanie\u201d Baker, will carry on the family legacy as she joins Eckerd in the fall as a first-year student in the Class of 2028.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat I wish for her and for all of the kids is that they will find the people that Jon and I did,\u201d said Jessica Baker. \u201cFriends that will be there whether it\u2019s two years or 20; friends who will answer 1,000 text messages and be on the journey with them from around the country; and friends who will be family. Maybe Beanie will meet them right here\u2014with her dad watching.\u201d<\/p>\n

Beach volleyball player Mariana Olivares-Cely \u201925 thanked those gathered for their support of the project and the team, saying the complex was the embodiment of a long-desired dream.<\/p>\n
