Elizabeth Pellegrini\u2019s decision to transfer to Eckerd College to study marine science in Fall 2023 is already paying dividends. The sophomore from Hereford, Maryland, is one of six Eckerd students to win the coveted 2024 National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Ernest F. Hollings Scholarship.<\/h3>\n[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row type=”full_width_content” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” column_direction=”default” column_direction_tablet=”default” column_direction_phone=”default” scene_position=”center” top_padding=”48″ text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” row_border_radius=”none” row_border_radius_applies=”bg” overflow=”visible” advanced_gradient_angle=”0″ overlay_strength=”0.3″ gradient_direction=”left_to_right” shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none” shape_type=”” gradient_type=”default”][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”right” column_element_direction_desktop=”default” column_element_spacing=”default” desktop_text_alignment=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_backdrop_filter=”none” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” column_position=”default” gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”1\/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” animation_type=”default” bg_image_animation=”none” border_type=”simple” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” column_padding_type=”default” gradient_type=”default”][vc_column_text]The NOAA Hollings Scholarship<\/a> provides up to $9,500 per year for two years of full-time study and a 10-week, full-time, paid internship at a NOAA facility for Summer 2025. Since the program\u2019s launch in 2005, 115 Eckerd students have become Hollings Scholars.<\/p>\n

Riley was sitting outside of the Sheen Environmental Studies building on April 1 checking emails when a flood of 14 notifications came in at once. \u201cI started sifting through the subjects, not even looking at the senders, and I saw something that looked a little odd,\u201d she says. \u201cNot even thinking, I opened it, and all I saw was the word \u2018Congratulations!\u2019\u00a0 I sat there with my mouth wide open in shock. I was so happy\u2014could even cry\u2014and was shaking. I was so excited and, honestly, I was in utter disbelief. When you work so hard for something, and put in so much time and effort, it\u2019s almost hard to believe it when it all works out.\u201d<\/p>\n

All six winners were notified via email on April 1 and immediately notified their parents and Eckerd College Assistant Dean of Faculty Kat Robinson, Ph.D., who played an important role in their application processes. And this was no joke.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe professors and advisers of Eckerd were really my main aids when it came to my application to Hollings,\u201d Mikaela says. \u201cMy mentor,\u00a0Dr. [William] Szelistowski<\/a>, told me I could be a good fit considering my academic performance, and Dr. Kat, from the [Bevan] Center for Academic Excellence<\/a>, really shepherded me and a bunch of other applicants through the whole process. Her guidance really helped me refine my application into something that the NOAA would be impressed by.\u201d<\/p>\n

Following an orientation in the summer of 2024, winners will be assigned to a NOAA facility or partner organization for an internship in Summer 2025. Organizers arrange the placements, but the students can dream.<\/p>\n

\u201cI would love to work with NOAA to monitor the ecological impacts the stony coral tissue loss disease outbreak in the Caribbean has on higher trophic levels,\u201d Lydia explains. \u201cConducting research that has real, tangible conservation implications has always been my aspiration, and I\u2019m so grateful to NOAA and Eckerd for helping me make this dream a reality.\u201d[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row]\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
