Each month, one member of the council proposes a topic to discuss\u2014such as accessibility, <a href=\"\/about\/deib\/\">DEIB efforts<\/a> or student-athlete relations.<\/p>\n<p>The council\u2019s main goal this academic year has been to lessen the distance between members of the administration and the student body. So far, the council has hosted several Cookies in Upham events in the Upham Administration building, where the president\u2019s offices are located.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve been trying to make [Upham] feel more approachable and accessible for students, so it\u2019s not so big and scary,\u201d says council co-chair Aidan McKinnon, a senior <a href=\"\/marinescience\/\">marine science<\/a> student from Edmond, Oklahoma.<\/p>\n<p>The Advisory Council was formed two years ago when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eckerd.edu\/news\/blog\/sixth-president-annarelli\/\">President James Annarelli, Ph.D., took the helm<\/a>.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row type=&#8221;full_width_content&#8221; Last year, they also had an opportunity to interview candidates for the vital staff position of vice president for academic affairs and dean of faculty. \u201cWe did not hold back,\u201d says Maddie Reifsteck, president of ECOS and a senior <a href=\"\/creative-writing\/\">creative writing<\/a> and marine science student from Portland, Oregon. \u201cSomething else that I think is an advantage of being on the council is that [President] Annarelli trusts us enough and trusts our opinions enough to [have wanted] us to be part of that search.\u201d The position was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eckerd.edu\/news\/blog\/wooley-dean-of-faculty\/\">filled by Christine Wooley, Ph.D., on Sept. 1, 2023<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In May, nine council members will graduate, leaving spaces open for new members to join, usually after being recommended by faculty or staff because of their leadership experience and interest in campus affairs.
