She\u2019s been involved with <a href=\"\/green\/\">sustainability at Eckerd<\/a> since her first year\u2014tackling roles in recycling, the Nu Bike Shop and the <a href=\"\/green\/farm\/\">Eckerd College Community Farm<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, grass in this swampy area grew very tall and provided habitat for rabbits and other critters. After maintenance workers mowed the grass, Macy was disappointed to see the bunnies displaced and wandering the parking lot. As an intern, she started a project to revitalize this area of campus, which is difficult to maintain.<\/p>\n<p>She first contacted several committees and received formal approval to create a native wetland. With Eckerd\u2019s longtime landscaping partner <a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/4nSn4sykoccguH7M6\">Twigs &amp; Leaves, a St. Petersburg nursery<\/a> that sources ecologically sustainable plant material, a small group of student volunteers worked to plant about 10 new native species. Michael Manlowe, the nursery\u2019s owner, delivered 39 trees and plants\u2014including blue flag iris, horsetail, pink mallow, pickerelweed, black-eyed Susan, sea-oxeye daisy, scarlet hibiscus, yellow canna, goldenrod, pink milkweed and leather fern.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column column_padding=&#8221;no-extra-padding&#8221; She hopes the wetland will become a populated habitat for birds.<\/p>\n<p>Director of Sustainability Evan Bollier \u201911 referred to this area as a \u201cdetention pond.\u201d Which isn\u2019t the same as a retention pond. When it rains, water from the bordering parking lot floods the grass, and heavy metals and other sediments are filtered out of the runoff.
