Now he has helped to re-establish the Beekeeping Club in his first year at Eckerd College.<\/p>\n

After years of other students\u2019 attempts, Hugh cleared multiple hurdles to convince administrators that the dangers they were worried about weren\u2019t anything to worry about. \u201cMy high school had seven [hives] less than 200 feet from the playground where 4-year-olds were playing, and we had no stinging incidents,\u201d says the Prospect, Kentucky, native. \u201cSo it is safe.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hugh hopes to eventually have around three well-established beehives on campus. But the club started humbly this spring.<\/p>\n

They anticipate receiving a split of three honeycomb frames from neurology researcher and Eckerd College Assistant Professor of Biology Scott Dobrin<\/a>\u2019s hive. \u201cWe are late in the season,\u201d Hugh says. \u201cAnd three frames with no queen is fairly weak. It\u2019s Florida. And hot. So surviving the winter isn\u2019t as difficult as up north. So I\u2019m not too worried about it. And if we feed them and supplement their growth, it will be fine.\u201d<\/p>\n

Despite the rough start, Hugh is ecstatic to recharter the club, believing the bees are worth it. \u201cThey are absolutely fascinating, lovely little critters,\u201d he explains. \u201cSo scientific, precise and beautiful. It\u2019s fascinating. I would recommend it to anyone and everyone. And I like helping others learn about it. This is why the club is fun, because you get to spread it to more people.\u201d<\/p>\n

They then combine water and nectar and fan their wings, slowly evaporating the water. Once exactly 82% of the water evaporates\u2014bees are very precise\u2014they will seal this new honey off and leave it. \u201cThe stuff that has taken humans centuries to discover, refine and figure out, bees are just evolved to do that. And they do it perfectly,\u201d Hugh says with excitement.<\/p>\n

The bee species used most in beekeeping is the European honeybee, originally from Italy. Though it\u2019s perfect for beekeeping because of its mild temperament, Hugh worries about how the introduction of this entirely new species into their habitat will impact the native bee populations.<\/p>\n

Other beekeepers have found there is no competition between different species.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row type=”full_width_content” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” column_direction=”default” column_direction_tablet=”default” column_direction_phone=”default” scene_position=”center” top_padding=”32″ text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” row_border_radius=”none” row_border_radius_applies=”bg” overflow=”visible” advanced_gradient_angle=”0″ overlay_strength=”0.3″ gradient_direction=”left_to_right” shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none” shape_type=”” gradient_type=”default”][vc_column column_padding=”padding-2-percent” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”all” column_element_direction_desktop=”default” column_element_spacing=”default” desktop_text_alignment=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_backdrop_filter=”none” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” column_position=”default” el_class=”lg_text” gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”1\/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” animation_type=”default” bg_image_animation=”none” border_type=”simple” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” column_padding_type=”default” gradient_type=”default”][vc_column_text css=”” text_direction=”default”]But Hugh wasn\u2019t comfortable with that assumption, saying, \u201cI wasn\u2019t really satisfied with just not doing anything. A weekly check-in is normally perfect. So most of the Beekeeping Club\u2019s time will be devoted to working with the bees already on campus.<\/p>\n

\u201cI love nature and being outside \u2026 the sound of walking up to a beehive,\u201d Hugh says. \u201cYou know, it\u2019s loud and busy. And then you smoke when it gets quiet.
