css=”” text_direction=”default”]Patrick, who graduated from Eckerd College with a degree in international studies<\/a> and high honors, works for the FBI<\/a> as a linguistics specialist in the Bureau\u2019s Portland, Oregon, office. For the past year and a half, he had been mentoring recent graduate Alexis Jackman \u201923, who had wanted to work for the FBI since she was in middle school. \u201cWe did FaceTime, and I was coaching her on how to structure a resume, and then I walked her through the ins and outs of the FBI website,\u201d Patrick explains.<\/p>\n

When it came to where Alexis could be stationed, \u201cI told her to cast as wide a net as possible,\u201d he recalls.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row type=”full_width_content” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” column_direction=”default” column_direction_tablet=”default” column_direction_phone=”default” scene_position=”center” top_padding=”32″ text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” row_border_radius=”none” row_border_radius_applies=”bg” overflow=”visible” advanced_gradient_angle=”0″ overlay_strength=”0.3″ gradient_direction=”left_to_right” shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none” shape_type=”” gradient_type=”default”][vc_column column_padding=”padding-2-percent” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”all” column_element_direction_desktop=”default” column_element_spacing=”default” desktop_text_alignment=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_backdrop_filter=”none” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” column_position=”default” el_class=”lg_text” gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”1\/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” animation_type=”default” bg_image_animation=”none” border_type=”simple” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” column_padding_type=”default” gradient_type=”default”][vc_column_text css=”” text_direction=”default”]\u201cShe said she had no geographical preferences but that it would be really cool to end up in the same office. And I thought, No chance. There are 56 FBI field offices across the United States. Then in February, over a half-year after she had graduated, I saw her name on the list of new hires at the Portland office.<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row type=”full_width_content” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” column_direction=”default” column_direction_tablet=”default” column_direction_phone=”default” scene_position=”center” top_padding=”32″ text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” row_border_radius=”none” row_border_radius_applies=”bg” overflow=”visible” advanced_gradient_angle=”0″ overlay_strength=”0.3″ gradient_direction=”left_to_right” shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none” shape_type=”” gradient_type=”default”][vc_column column_padding=”padding-2-percent” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”right” column_element_direction_desktop=”default” column_element_spacing=”default” desktop_text_alignment=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_backdrop_filter=”none” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” column_position=”default” gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”2\/3″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” animation_type=”default” bg_image_animation=”none” border_type=”simple” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” column_padding_type=”default” gradient_type=”default”][vc_column_text css=”” text_direction=”default”]\u201cOf all the offices, she was able to get into this one. This is a dream come true for both of us. We work on the same floor.\u201d<\/p>\n

But then this was a mentorship made in heaven. After serving as a career contact, Patrick had stepped up to the Career Mentor Program<\/a> in 2022. The program pairs current students and recent graduates with alumni who provide guidance during the transition from college to career. The first student he would mentor\u2014Alexis.<\/p>\n

\u201cI added Patrick to the program because of the strong interest he had in helping students,\u201d explains Maddy Gumprecht \u201921, the employer relations and internships coordinator<\/a> at Eckerd who leads the program. \u201cAlexis\u2019s dream was to work at the FBI, and Patrick would be an inside contact to help her understand the organization better and connect her to other contacts. Students are allowed to request any mentor as long as they have a reason, so even though his profession was outside of her major [chemistry<\/a>], he was working for her dream employer.\u201d<\/p>\n

When Alexis was looking for a career mentor at the start of her senior year, she requested Patrick because she saw what he did for a living. As for where she wanted to be posted, Cleveland was her first choice because it\u2019s close to her hometown of Solon, Ohio. \u201cPatrick has been incredibly helpful,\u201d she adds. \u201cWhen he was away from work for a week, he made a point of asking people I work with to make sure I was doing okay. And he introduced me to a really good group of people, who are now my good friends.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSome people at work have jokingly called me her work dad,\u201d adds Patrick, who has two teenagers of his own. Both of his parents and an aunt graduated from Florida Presbyterian College in 1971 before its name was changed to Eckerd College. In fact, he probably wouldn\u2019t exist if his parents hadn\u2019t met at the College and been convinced by one of their own mentors that they would make a good match. \u201cI couldn\u2019t be happier to welcome the next generation of Eckerd alumni<\/a> to the Bureau,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

So now Alexis is an operations support technician for the Bureau. \u201cIt\u2019s a good way to figure out how the office works as a whole,\u201d she explains. \u201cIt\u2019s a great position.\u201d<\/p>\n

And it\u2019s not difficult, she adds, to see herself as a mentor someday. \u201cI can absolutely see myself doing that down the road,\u201d she says. \u201cI was a training coordinator with EC-ERT [Eckerd College Emergency Response Team<\/a>], and I really enjoy helping people.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gumprecht says she encourages graduating seniors to stay in touch with their mentors, as Alexis did. \u201cPatrick shared many updates with me throughout 2023 and 2024,\u201d Gumprecht says, \u201cbut the best one I received was the message this past February that not only did Alexis get hired by the FBI, but she was placed at the same site as Patrick.\u201d[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row]\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
