Three of our senior research students attended: Maddie Enman, an animal studies and <a href=\"\/marinescience\/\">marine science<\/a> student from Grayslake, Illinois; Alejandra L\u00f3pez Rueda, an animal studies and <a href=\"\/biology\/\">biology<\/a> student from Coyoac\u00e1n, Mexico; and Cassidy Taylor, an animal studies and <a href=\"\/human-development\/\">human development<\/a> student from Port St. Lucie, Florida. Both Cassidy and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eckerd.edu\/news\/blog\/florida-undergraduate-research-journal-editorial-board\/\">Maddie presented at the symposium<\/a>, which was a great success.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe biggest benefit is the opportunity to network,\u201d Bransford adds. \u201cYou get to talk to professionals from different areas\u2014people you wouldn\u2019t normally expect to talk to. And you learn about new and interesting research and get contact information. column_padding_type=&#8221;default&#8221; gradient_type=&#8221;default&#8221;][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221; text_direction=&#8221;default&#8221;]But doing that research may have gotten a little easier.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was anxious about speaking at first,\u201d Cassidy says. \u201cI had done Eckerd <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eckerd.edu\/news\/blog\/students-across-majors-show-off-hard-work-at-2024-eckerd-college-research-symposium\/\">symposiums<\/a>, but this was different. After presenting, I noticed an improvement in my public speaking, and I felt proud of myself for hitting every point that I wanted to talk about.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m pretty sure we were the three youngest people there,\u201d she points out. \u201cUndergraduates don\u2019t usually present at these symposiums. I listened to primatologists with Ph.D.s and grad students present their research, and I found out that I was very interested in research with lowland gorillas. It really made me want to learn more.
