The Herpetology Department regularly hosts graduate students, postdoctoral candidates and professionals, but rarely undergraduates. The College and the Herpetology Department came to terms, and now, every other year, two Eckerd students spend an intense three weeks in January during the College\u2019s Winter Term working, learning and forging relationships at one of the world\u2019s most prestigious centers of research and education in the natural sciences.<\/p>\n<p>Established in 1869, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/topic\/museum-cultural-institution\">museum<\/a> holds collections of research specimens numbering more than 32 million, and its collections of fossils and insects are among the largest in the world. The museum also conducts research in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/science\/anthropology\">anthropology<\/a>, astronomy, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/science\/entomology\">entomology<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/science\/herpetology\">herpetology<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/science\/ichthyology\">ichthyology<\/a>, invertebrates, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/science\/mammalogy\">mammalogy<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/science\/mineralogy\">mineralogy<\/a>, ornithology, and vertebrate\/invertebrate paleontology.<\/p>\n<p>It is home to a 485,000-volume library on natural history and is visited by more than 5 million people every year\u2014including students from Eckerd College. \u201cWe are the only ones sending undergrads,\u201d Goessling says. \u201cWe have a specific way of plugging our students in. <a href=\"\/biology\/\">Our biology program here<\/a> is a good fit for the type of work the museum does. We\u2019re working with grad students and the leading researchers in their field, and it\u2019s been really cool to talk with them. And we\u2019re making contacts. I want to go to grad school and eventually get a research position, and now I\u2019ll be able to say I\u2019ve had experience working with collections at the American Museum of Natural History. This is really valuable for what I plan to do later on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As Goessling puts it, \u201cThey get to meet and work with people who are some of the best scientists on Earth. That\u2019s special.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And as Allison Quatrini, Ph.D., associate professor of political science at Eckerd, points out, you never know who you\u2019ll run into at a world-renowned natural history museum. \u201cI taught a Global Studies at the United Nations course during Winter Term, and Lauren invited my class for a behind-the-scenes tour of the Museum of Natural History during the afternoon of January 15th,\u201d Quatrini explains.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLauren did some of the guiding, but Keller and Colby did the lion&#8217;s share. Both did a fantastic job, and we as beginners learned so much about reptiles.
