Eighty-seven Eckerd students have participated in the program since its establishment in 2010, and now Zoey Lorusso, Emma Egan, Jordan Sergey, Sam Shin and Sophia DiPaola are the next to embark on this medical experiential learning journey.<\/p>\n<p>Zoey Lorusso, a sophomore <a href=\"\/chemistry\/biochemistry\/\">biochemistry<\/a> student from Sisters, Oregon, and president of Eckerd\u2019s Women in STEM club, had a jaw-drop reaction when she learned she\u2019d been accepted into the program.<\/p>\n<p>After <a href=\"\/chemistry\/faculty\/bonner\/\">Assistant Professor of Chemistry Lisa Bonner, Ph.D.<\/a>, shared the \u201clovely email\u201d notifying Zoey about her internship, Zoey cried happy tears and contacted her mom to share the news.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column column_padding=&#8221;no-extra-padding&#8221; While Zoey hadn\u2019t always planned to enter dentistry, she loves going to the dentist. \u201cIt\u2019s comparable to getting my nails done,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>Emma Egan, a junior <a href=\"\/biology\/\">biology<\/a> and pre-med student from Mount Washington, Kentucky, says she is \u201csuper stoked\u201d about the upcoming internship and feels \u201ctaken aback by the opportunity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This is Emma\u2019s first year at Eckerd, as a <a href=\"https:\/\/eckerdtritons.com\/sports\/womens-basketball\">women\u2019s basketball<\/a> transfer student, and she learned about this opportunity from <a href=\"\/biology\/faculty\/flaherty\/\">Associate Professor of Biology Denise Boyce Flaherty, Ph.D.<\/a>, when Emma first visited Eckerd. Over Winter Term, Bonner sent an email encouraging students to apply for it, Emma recalls, and she even had the chance to speak with a student who participated in the internship last year.<\/p>\n<p>Emma has an interest in human health and says she thinks \u201cgenomic medicine and lifestyle and a lot of different implementations holistically can really move the medicine forward.\u201d She hopes to one day head her own practice or work in a practice that shares these goals and morals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is kind of outside my comfort zone, like, being in a lab setting,\u201d Emma says. But she is excited to be in a lab and learn \u201chow that research can contribute to actually making advancements in the field.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Both Sam, a biology student from North Wales, Pennsylvania, and Sophia, a biology student from Eden Prairie, Minnesota, were surprised to earn this internship as sophomores, instead of upperclass students.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI got the email and started screaming,\u201d Sophia says, emphasizing her excitement. She also volunteers at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/all-childrens-hospital\">Johns Hopkins All Children\u2019s Hospital<\/a> and asks nurses and doctors how they got where they are today.<\/p>\n<p>Sam, whose dad is a sports medicine doctor, is in a similar position\u2014leaning toward clinical medicine and the orthopedic field\u2014and ready to learn about the genomic aspect of science. Both Sophia and Sam seem to have an intersection of passions, from athletics to medicine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe both <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/sirensrfc\/\">play rugby<\/a>, a pretty physically demanding sport, and there\u2019s lots of injuries,\u201d Sam says, explaining their intrigue in sports medicine and treating such injuries.<\/p>\n<p>Several interns emphasized the significance of Eckerd opportunities like these internships, which allow students to learn experientially and make lifelong professional connections.<\/p>\n<p>Zoey correlates going to school with visiting the eye doctor. They place lenses in front of your eyes, layering and layering until your vision is nearly perfect.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI feel like that\u2019s what Eckerd does,\u201d she says.
