That serendipity\u2014and a little negotiation with the registrar\u2014will make Haven the first Eckerd student to graduate with a minor in behavioral neuroscience this May.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe mix of the fields is truly what I love [along with] really diving deeper into how the brain works\u2014not just behaviorally \u2026 but also inside your brain\u2014what actually is happening and what neurons are firing and why,\u201d Haven explains.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/psychology\/faculty\/dyer\/\">Assistant Professor of Psychology Katherine Dyer, Ph.D.<\/a>, whose area of expertise is biopsychology, had discovered the need for a new minor while consulting with her colleagues about their mentees\u2019 areas of research interest. text_direction=&#8221;default&#8221;]When the additional program was announced in January, Haven knew she wanted it to help her go directly into a Ph.D. program without having to earn a master\u2019s degree in between. The <a href=\"\/academics\/honor-societies\/\">Psi Chi International Honor Society in Psychology<\/a> and TriBeta Biological Honor Society inductee was thrilled when the Eckerd <a href=\"\/registrar\/\">registrar<\/a> said a <a href=\"\/human-development\/\">human development<\/a> course she\u2019d taken while <a href=\"\/global\/\">studying abroad<\/a> in Germany and Spain in Spring 2024 would count toward the psychology requirements of the minor.<\/p>\n<p>Her college career has been research heavy, beginning with joining the lab of <a href=\"\/biology\/faculty\/flaherty\/\">Associate Professor of Biology Denise Flaherty, Ph.D.<\/a>, who conducts Alzheimer\u2019s studies with <em>C. elegans<\/em>. Haven also will present her own research, on how substituting epilepsy drugs impacts autism diagnoses in zebrafish, at the Cognitive Neuroscience Society Annual Meeting in Boston March 29\u2013April 1. Her interests pivoted from the neurodegenerative to the neurodevelopmental when she worked with autistic children and adults at summer camps in Maine and Colorado. Currently, she interns at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/all-childrens-hospital\">Johns Hopkins All Children\u2019s Hospital<\/a> in psychometry\u2014scoring cognitive tests for children to determine autism diagnoses and the need for accommodations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI feel like that kind of amplified my love for understanding what is autism,\u201d Haven says. \u201cHow do you help people with autism? How do you spread awareness?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWorking at that summer camp [in Colorado] really opened my eyes to how it [autism] presents itself differently in every single individual. And that was just truly amazing.
