column_padding_type=&#8221;default&#8221; gradient_type=&#8221;default&#8221;][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221; text_direction=&#8221;default&#8221;]From paintings to crocheted plastic, students, alumni and other members of the St. Petersburg community brought their passions for art and the planet together. <a href=\"\/president\/\">Eckerd President Jim Annarelli, Ph.D.<\/a>, was celebrating his 70th birthday that day, and 35 years at Eckerd, as he explained at the start of the event.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a wonderful educational tool to help raise the consciousness of our community about the importance of <a href=\"\/green\/plastics\/\">the pledge to avoid single-use plastics<\/a>,\u201d he said about the art contest\u2019s impetus.<\/p>\n<p>For most of the event, students, faculty and Annarelli explored the artwork\u2014learning about the meaning and inspiration behind each piece from the artists themselves.<\/p>\n<p>Yarrow Bercovici-biotti, an Eckerd junior <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eckerd.edu\/environmental-studies\/why-environmental-studies-at-eckerd\/\">environmental studies<\/a> student from Ashburnham, Massachusetts, had originally made <em>reduce, reuse, reef-cycle<\/em>, featuring a coral reef and parrotfish, for her Performance in the Environment class last semester. The class had been assigned to make a prop and learn about reducing waste and being environmentally aware.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column column_padding=&#8221;no-extra-padding&#8221; column_padding_tablet=&#8221;inherit&#8221; So she gave him \u201ca home\u201d with the reef made of plastic bottles, cardboard, pipe cleaners and other materials.<\/p>\n<p>Yarrow is inspired by the ocean and marine life, and saw a parrotfish <a href=\"\/global\/winter\/\">during Winter Term last year<\/a> while scuba diving in Roat\u00e1n, Honduras.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just thought that they\u2019re really funny looking and colorful, so I thought it would be a great subject for something like this, especially with how much plastic is in the ocean. I think it\u2019s important for art to be used for awareness for that,\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel Smith, a senior <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eckerd.edu\/marinescience\/why-marine-science-at-eckerd\/\">marine science<\/a> student from Waverly, New York, exhibited a piece that explored plastic in our oceans and overfishing. Overall, she said\u2014pointing to the 45 fish and a frame of crocheted and braided plastic bags\u2014her artwork is about overconsumption.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column column_padding=&#8221;no-extra-padding&#8221; Five $100 prizes were offered for various categories, and one award was the People\u2019s Choice, which attendees voted for by scanning a QR code and selecting their favorite piece.<\/p>\n<p>This event gave many students both a way to repurpose items that would otherwise be tossed and a creative outlet to express their environmental interests.<\/p>\n<p>The show, Annarelli said, \u201callows us
