\u201cI knew nobody<\/em> at Eckerd, except for the people at WECX and my roommates,\u201d Taj says.<\/p>\n

So I went super into it and told Jordan [Mallis \u201925, the previous manager and a recent environmental studies graduate from Connecticut], \u2018I need a show,\u2019\u201d Taj recalls.<\/p>\n

Maddie Merrick, co-general manager and a senior animal studies<\/a> student from Somerset, Kentucky, describes herself as a \u201chuge concert person\u201d who\u2019s been to more than 100 shows. After running into Jordan her sophomore year, she knew she had to join the club.<\/p>\n

Today, she hosts Maddie on the Mic<\/em>, while Taj runs Taj\u2019s Punk Happy Hour<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Until recently, the station hadn\u2019t been updated since the early \u201990s. \u201cAll the equipment was RadioShack branded. It was so old and decrepit,\u201d Taj explains.<\/p>\n

She and Maddie, over the summer, took on this large project to renovate the studio. Everything\u2019s redone.\u201d<\/p>\n

The results speak for themselves. WECX now boasts more DJs than ever before\u2014a total of 84 members\u2014making it the largest club on campus and with even more student engagement since its revamp.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve never had a completely full schedule. This year, we have 84 DJ slots filled. We even added Saturdays. That\u2019s how much demand there is now,\u201d Taj exclaims.<\/p>\n

\u201cNow people say, \u2018I feel comfortable here. I feel like this is my space,\u2019\u201d Maddie says.<\/p>\n

Outside of the studio, WECX is known for some of Eckerd\u2019s biggest events.<\/p>\n

A student favorite is WECXAPALOOZA<\/a>, a daylong music festival on campus.<\/p>\n

\u201cWecxapalooza is our own Lollapalooza,\u201d Maddie says. \u201cAnd we have a lot coming up this semester that we\u2019re really excited for, and even more coming up next semester that will be even bigger and better than ever before.\u201d<\/p>\n

Best of all, it\u2019s free.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s literally a free concert,\u201d she adds. \u201cLike, hello? With streaming services dominating the way people listen to music, Taj and Maddie obviously believe college radio still matters.<\/p>\n

\u201cCollege radio is a dying art form. Our job is to keep people free to talk on the airwaves, make noise and stay loud,\u201d Taj says.<\/p>\n

You can listen from anywhere in the world.<\/p>\n

Sam Atkinson, a sophomore anthropology<\/a> student from Montclair, New Jersey, is the historian of the radio station. He says, \u201cWhat I love most about WECX is it\u2019s truly whatever you want it to be. Whether it\u2019s queuing up whatever music feels right in the moment, chatting with your friends, or crafting intricate and unique shows, WECX gives you the freedom to choose how you want to spend that hour each week in the studio and broadcasts it worldwide for friends and family to listen.\u201d<\/p>\n

August Lambrecht, a sophomore visual arts<\/a> student from San Antonio, Texas, is the social media coordinator at WECX.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s very much \u2026 one of the only places in this campus where people are truly, like, free to express themselves,\u201d he says. \u201c[W]hen I first came to college, lost, I feel like I didn\u2019t make that many friends. But when I went in there, I was like, \u2018[O]h, this is the place for me.\u2019 I think it just brings people together.\u201d<\/p>\n

On the future of the club, Maddie says she hopes \u201c[e]veryone at WECX stays unapologetically themselves.<\/p>\n
