With her service dog, a 9-year-old greyhound named Como curled up at her feet, J.C. explained to the students she was having issues accessing YouTube videos.<\/p>\n

The students\u2014Naomi Herbst, a junior animal studies<\/a> and environmental studies<\/a> student from Bristol Wisconsin; Harrison Jerum, a sophomore biology<\/a> student from Pittsford, New York; and Ava Johnson, a senior political science<\/a> student from Stillwater, Minnesota\u2014offered several solutions. \u201cTell me more, tell me more,\u201d J.C. said eagerly. And the students did.<\/p>\n

A few minutes later, J.C. looked up from her device, smiled, and asked the students, \u201cAre you going to be here next week?\u201d Yes, the students assured her, they will.<\/p>\n

J.C. and the Eckerd College students are part of Mentor Up, a technology training program from the AARP Foundation<\/a> that helps older adults navigate their electronic devices and brightens their day. All of the students in the program are members of her Aspects of Aging class. Part of the course includes volunteering with the Mentor Up program.<\/p>\n

Shovali says she first approached AARP because she wanted to begin a Reflective Service Learning<\/a> program. At the time, AARP\u2019s field coordinator for Tampa Bay was Michelle Cyr \u201902, an Eckerd graduate<\/a>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row type=”full_width_content” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” column_direction=”default” column_direction_tablet=”default” column_direction_phone=”default” scene_position=”center” top_padding=”32″ text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” row_border_radius=”none” row_border_radius_applies=”bg” overflow=”visible” advanced_gradient_angle=”0″ overlay_strength=”0.3″ gradient_direction=”left_to_right” shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none” shape_type=”” gradient_type=”default”][vc_column column_padding=”padding-2-percent” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”all” column_element_direction_desktop=”default” column_element_spacing=”default” desktop_text_alignment=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_backdrop_filter=”none” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” column_position=”default” el_class=”lg_text” gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”1\/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” animation_type=”default” bg_image_animation=”none” border_type=”simple” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” column_padding_type=”default” gradient_type=”default”][vc_column_text css=”” text_direction=”default”]\u201cMichelle knew Eckerd students are special and would want to connect with older adults,\u201d Shovali says. \u201cI reached out to brainstorm, and this is what we came up with.\u201d<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row type=”full_width_content” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” column_direction=”default” column_direction_tablet=”default” column_direction_phone=”default” scene_position=”center” top_padding=”32″ text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” row_border_radius=”none” row_border_radius_applies=”bg” overflow=”visible” advanced_gradient_angle=”0″ overlay_strength=”0.3″ gradient_direction=”left_to_right” shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none” shape_type=”” gradient_type=”default”][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”right” column_element_direction_desktop=”default” column_element_spacing=”default” desktop_text_alignment=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_backdrop_filter=”none” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” column_position=”default” gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”1\/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” animation_type=”default” bg_image_animation=”none” border_type=”simple” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” column_padding_type=”default” gradient_type=”default”][vc_column_text css=”” text_direction=”default”]Saturday\u2019s Eckerd cohort of more than a dozen students was led by Adonaya Joyce, a senior human development<\/a> and psychology<\/a> student from Philadelphia. Adonaya is taking Eckerd\u2019s Internship in Human Development<\/a> course and chose to intern at Westminster Shores.<\/p>\n

Harrison says being part of the program made him realize that older adults are \u201creally quite like us. I can relate to them in many different ways. I was expecting it would be very frustrating trying to help them. But they’re a lot more tech savvy than I expected.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis class is a great way to figure out if working with an older population is a good fit for you. I found this course made me more interested in the field. And it\u2019s a great way to practice interacting with people you’re not used to talking with every day. I was a little nervous going in. What if they\u2019re rude or mean, or I don\u2019t know how to explain something? But all of the residents are very sweet and understanding, and so appreciative that we\u2019re trying our best.<\/p>\n

Ava says she gained an appreciation for working to meet people where they are. \u201cAnd asking the right questions and being clear and concise,\u201d she adds. \u201cI want to go into the legal profession and this will help. Learning how to explain things effectively, especially little things.\u201d Ava spent much of her time taking notes from the session that she would later give to J.C.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe had been talking about how much she loves YouTube, so helping her download the app was important,\u201d Ava says. \u201cBut she was telling us about her life. Building relationships and making intergenerational interactions is part of what we try to do.\u201d<\/p>\n

That point was driven home by Eckerd alumna Sarah Feehan \u201919. Sarah is the resident lifestyle facilitator at Westminster Shores. In 2016, she was a human development student in Shovali\u2019s Aspects of Aging class. \u201cThe residents are constantly asking questions about technology,\u201d Sarah explains. \u201cThe average age here is in the mid-80s, and they\u2019re afraid of technology because they didn\u2019t grow up with it. If they press the wrong number, they think it might break something. So the technology help by itself is a huge benefit.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut the greater benefit is the intergenerational interaction. There are so many benefits for both sides, and it really opens your eyes to how similar we all really are. Seeing the students get to learn from the residents who really enjoy passing along their wisdom \u2026 a lot of friendships are created through these programs.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row type=”full_width_content” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” column_direction=”default” column_direction_tablet=”default” column_direction_phone=”default” scene_position=”center” top_padding=”32″ text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” row_border_radius=”none” row_border_radius_applies=”bg” overflow=”visible” advanced_gradient_angle=”0″ overlay_strength=”0.3″ gradient_direction=”left_to_right” shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none” shape_type=”” gradient_type=”default”][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”right” column_element_direction_desktop=”default” column_element_spacing=”default” desktop_text_alignment=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_backdrop_filter=”none” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” column_position=”default” gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”1\/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” animation_type=”default” bg_image_animation=”none” border_type=”simple” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” column_padding_type=”default” gradient_type=”default”][vc_column_text css=”” text_direction=”default”]\u201cThe residents are always excited when they see the students come in,\u201d Sarah adds. \u201cThey end up feeling like adopted grandparents. And oftentimes the students are really blown away by how much they enjoyed spending time with older adults. There\u2019s a lot of mutual respect in the room.\u201d<\/p>\n

Naomi\u2019s grandfather is an immigrant from Ukraine who came to the U.S. during World War II. Like many older adults, he sometimes struggles with cell phones, iPads, and other devices. \u201cMy grandpa usually gets very frustrated, and he won\u2019t admit he needs help,\u201d Naomi says. \u201cNow I know to give him time to process what I\u2019ve said, to not infantilize him, and to have patience.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve always felt very strongly that ageism is a common form of discrimination that our society does not acknowledge,\u201d she adds. \u201cThe program is a great way to learn about working with older adults, getting hands-on experience, and learning how to interact and problem solve with different generations.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think we helped J.C. today. Learning how to flip her iPad so she could find what she was looking for was a game-changer.\u201d<\/p>\n
