Discussion was lively when Marina Belotserkovskaya brought up the parallels between the American hipster culture and the Russian nationalist food movement at the third annual Eckerd College Humanities Symposium on April 27.<\/h3>\n[\/vc_column_text][divider line_type=”No Line” custom_height=”24″][vc_column_text]Her presentation, \u201cAnti-Westernism in Modern Day Russian Marketing,\u201d used the example of the ways advertisers are pushing Russian fermented-bread drink Kvass to displace American brands such as Coca-Cola.<\/p>\n

\u201cStudent groups are wearing protest T-shirts that say, \u2018I refuse Coca-Cola,\u2019 and a company is named Nikola, which literally means not cola,\u201d said Belotserkovskaya, a junior environmental studies major from Atlanta. \u201cIt has a lot of similarities to the American eat local, buy local movement.\u201d<\/p>\n

The presentation was one of 16 held inside and outside the Sheen Center auditorium. The annual symposium gives students the chance to present their scholarly work to an audience and panel of judges for discussion and recognition. This year\u2019s topics ranged from the films of Wes Anderson and the race to understanding environmental issues in Indonesia.<\/p>\n

Diego Fleitas, a junior international studies major from Tupelo, Miss., took top honors for his auditorium presentation \u201cPunic and Weak: Sardinians as Barbarians.\u201d Belotserkovskaya won second place. The interactive lobby presentation winner was Matthew Cramer\u2019s \u201cPortrayal of Colombia in the Media and its Effect on the Colombian Consciousness.\u201d Second place was awarded to Hannah Day\u2019s “‘I See Everything that Made Me’: Beasts of the Southern Wild<\/em> and the Possibility of a 21st Century Black Tomboy Hero.”<\/p>\n[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” overlay_strength=”0.3″ shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_link_target=”_self” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” width=”1\/2″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column_text]\n

Belotserkovskaya said she enjoyed presenting at the symposium and sharing a bit of her Moldovan parents\u2019 Soviet heritage with Eckerd College. Upon moving to St. Petersburg, she immediately found a store that sold Kvass, to combat homesickness.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen my parents were young, there were no choices in the Soviet Union,\u201d she explained. \u201cNow they have to compete with Western brands, and it\u2019s fascinating how they market Kvass as a part of the Russian identity.\u201d<\/p>\n
