css=”” text_direction=”default”]For members of the Wild Trails Hiking Club<\/a>, experiences like this have quickly become a part of campus life.<\/p>\n

The club was founded in Spring 2024 by Mary McReynolds, a senior majoring in marine science<\/a> and environmental studies<\/a> from Hazard, Kentucky, and Hazel Schaub, a junior studying marine science from Spokane, Washington.<\/p>\n

On a Spring Break service trip<\/a> to Ocala National Forest<\/a> north of Orlando, Mary and Hazel worked on trail maintenance with the Florida Trail Association<\/a>.<\/p>\n

While on the trip, they began to question why Eckerd didn\u2019t have a club planning more excursions to explore Florida\u2019s natural spaces.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s the only public air-filled cavern in Florida,\u201d Mary explains. \u201cEverything else is on private land or doesn\u2019t have air.\u201d<\/p>\n

Beyond the caves, students experienced Florida\u2019s wildlife up close.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve done guided tours at a lot of restoration preserves,\u201d Hazel explains. \u201cOne of the more impressive ones that\u2019s pretty close is Robinson Preserve<\/a>. It used to be farmland, and they totally restructured it to allow for the growth of mangroves.\u201d<\/p>\n

The group has also toured with Director of the Tampa Bay Estuary Program<\/a> Maya Burke, an experience that allowed students to see conservation efforts happening close to campus.<\/p>\n
