Four Eckerd College students received the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Hollings Scholarship this spring\u2014bringing the school\u2019s total to 66 recipients, still the most in the nation.<\/h3>\n[\/vc_column_text][divider line_type=”No Line” custom_height=”24″][image_with_animation image_url=”2051″ animation=”Fade In” hover_animation=”none” alignment=”center” border_radius=”none” box_shadow=”none” image_loading=”default” max_width=”100%” max_width_mobile=”default”][vc_column_text](From left to right) Eckerd College sophomores Jessica Heckman, Emily Colson, Lucy Fitzgerald and Abigail Thomas were awarded the 2016 NOAA Hollings Scholarship.<\/em>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” column_direction=”default” column_direction_tablet=”default” column_direction_phone=”default” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” row_border_radius=”none” row_border_radius_applies=”bg” overlay_strength=”0.3″ gradient_direction=”left_to_right” shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”all” column_element_spacing=”default” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”1\/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” bg_image_animation=”none” border_type=”simple” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid”][vc_column_text]Sophomores Emily Colson, Lucy Fitzgerald, Jessica Heckman and Abigail Thomas each earned a $9,500 scholarship for both their junior and senior years and a $700-per-week internship to take place the summer after their junior years at a NOAA facility.<\/p>\n

Thomas, who used Eckerd\u2019s Create Your Own Major program to focus on environmental science and design, said she had been confident she would be a Hollings Scholar<\/a> ever since she learned about the program her freshman year.<\/p>\n

\u201cI believe in thinking positively about things,\u201d said the Portland, Ore., native. \u201cI really like estuary work and estuary preservation, and dealing with stormwater. So I\u2019d like to work in a NOAA facility that does these things.\u201d<\/p>\n

Scholarship applicants were required to submit an essay along with their academic credentials, and all three of our winners majoring in marine science <\/a>wrote about their relationships with the ocean.<\/p>\n

\u201cI wrote about how I\u2019ve done research in the past with [Eckerd professor] Dr. Gregg Brooks<\/a> and that NOAA would be the next step in my research career,\u201d said Heckman, of Lincroft, N.J., who also majors in biology.<\/p>\n

Students were on Spring Break when the scholarship winners were announced in March.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was in Belize at the time. My family goes every year and it\u2019s where I first fell in love with ocean research,\u201d said Fitzgerald, of Spencer, Mass. \u201cThe East Coast is two hours ahead of there, so I kept refreshing at 2 a.m. and the Internet went out. My mom had to drive me to an Internet cafe in the morning. I might have shouted.\u201d<\/p>\n

This summer, Fitzgerald will head off to Woods Hole, Mass., to do a Research Experience for Undergraduates<\/a> Internship from the National Science Foundation.<\/p>\n

All four winners said they were extremely excited about joining Eckerd\u2019s growing list of Hollings Scholars.<\/p>\n

Colson, a member of the Eckerd College Search and Rescue<\/a> team from Fishers, Ind., said she believes the scholarship will be an important stepping stone on her career path. \u201cI\u2019m excited about what doors and opportunities this will open,\u201d she said.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row]\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
