The programs are built around students’ interests and are supported by scholarships and financial assistance, helping make international travel more accessible.<\/p>\n

That commitment to global education recently took 24 members of Eckerd’s baseball<\/a> and softball<\/a> teams more than 9,000 miles from campus to Sydney and Melbourne, Australia.<\/p>\n

From May 20 through June 3, students immersed themselves in Australian culture as part of Business and Sport in Australia, a faculty-led course taught by Sandra Gra\u04aba, DBA<\/a>, professor of international business<\/a> and marketing<\/a> and chair of Eckerd’s Comparative Cultures Collegium<\/a>.<\/p>\n

At a National Rugby League<\/a> match between the St. George Illawarra Dragons<\/a> and the New Zealand Warriors<\/a>, for instance, students learned how teams attract fans, members and sponsors. They later attended an Australian Football League<\/a> game at Melbourne’s Marvel Stadium<\/a>, where they experienced firsthand the energy surrounding \u201cfooty,\u201d the country’s most popular css=”” text_direction=”default”]That enthusiasm was impossible to miss at the Melbourne Cricket Ground<\/a>, known locally as \u201cThe G.\u201d During a one-hour tour, students learned how the iconic sporting venue has evolved into a year-round entertainment destination and economic driver for the city, hosting everything from cricket matches and Australian Rules Football games to a Taylor Swift<\/a> concert.<\/p>\n

The group also met with members of the marketing team behind the Australian Open<\/a>, who gave them a behind-the-scenes look at the strategy and planning required to grow one of the world’s premier tennis tournaments.<\/p>\n

For Molly Scott, a rising junior biology<\/a> student from Crown Point, Indiana, that visit was one of the highlights of the trip.<\/p>\n

\u201cI hope a lot of our athletes leave Eckerd with the travel bug\u2014that desire to get outside their bubble and explore,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

The trip also gave players uninterrupted time together away from practices, games and the pressures of a competitive season.<\/p>\n

\u201cBeing together that long\u2014almost every second of the day\u2014really brought the girls together,\u201d says head softball coach Michelle Frew \u201991<\/a>. \u201cThey\u2019re going to be talking about this trip forever.\u201d<\/p>\n

For Molly, those memories are only part of the lasting impact. As a first-time international traveler, she came home with greater confidence navigating unfamiliar places, a deeper appreciation for another culture, and a broader perspective on the world beyond campus.<\/p>\n
