The tortoises themselves, he describes as cool, charismatic and having quirky aspects to their biology and behavior. Not to mention, they’re much easier to find than other species–making it more likely to have a large sample size for students to interact with.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”all” top_margin_tablet=”32″ top_margin_phone=”32″ flex_gap_desktop=”10px” column_element_direction_desktop=”default” column_element_spacing=”default” desktop_text_alignment=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_backdrop_filter=”none” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” column_position=”default” gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”1/3″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” animation_type=”default” bg_image_animation=”none” border_type=”simple” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” column_padding_type=”default” gradient_type=”default”][image_with_animation image_url=”20766″ image_size=”full” max_width=”100%” max_width_mobile=”default” animation_type=”entrance” animation=”None” animation_movement_type=”transform_y” hover_animation=”none” alignment=”” img_link_large=”yes” border_radius=”none” box_shadow=”none” image_loading=”default”][divider line_type=”No Line” custom_height=”16″][vc_column_text css=”” text_direction=”default”]Karin Ebey, ’25 cradles a gopher tortoise during a research trip. Goessling’s students conduct paid and independent thesis research. Many students conduct out-of-state research, and Goessling owns a house in southern Alabama where students can stay for free.

Karin Ebey, ’25, took several classes with Goessling and eventually co-authored published research. Hilton jokes that he has a high tolerance for “tediosity”–and he’d routinely check on his students working tedious assignments.

Once the researchers have identified an individual tortoise, they analyze its social network.

“There are certain animals that preferentially interact with each other and not with other tortoises. So you can think of it as like junior high, and they form cliques,” Hilton says.

Hilton says he is not a micromanager and he wants to treat his research students as colleagues. Mark Yamane, ’22, worked closely with Hilton on this research for his undergraduate thesis, and he’s now a master’s student in the Aquatic and Fishery Sciences program at the University of Washington.

“Machine learning is kind of like a tool and it can be applied to everything,” Yamane says. “There’s all this biology that you wouldn’t learn necessarily just within computer science.”

Yamane says Eckerd provided opportunities to get involved with other disciplines and develop new skills, which has made him a unique candidate for future opportunities.

The technology that Yamane played a foundational role in developing is still in use when appropriate for the research, Hilton says.

“These things rarely die,” Hilton adds. “If you build something useful, it’s going to continue to get used over and over.”[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

[vc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” column_direction=”default” column_direction_tablet=”default” column_direction_phone=”default” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” row_border_radius=”none” row_border_radius_applies=”bg” row_position_desktop=”default” row_position_tablet=”inherit” row_position_phone=”inherit” overflow=”visible” overlay_strength=”0.3″ gradient_direction=”left_to_right” shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column column_padding=”no-extraa-padding” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”all” flex_gap_desktop=”10px”…

[45,50,85,86,159
1557,1644,348,1639
post-20763","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-biology","category-computer-science","category-research","category-student-research","category-students","tag-biology","tag-egmont-key","tag-gopher-tortoise","tag-student-research
<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v28.2 (Yoast SEO v28.3) -
