The course, Under Our Eyes: Exploring the Natural World<\/a>, revolves around plants and animals we don\u2019t always notice.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat diversity just doesn\u2019t cross people\u2019s minds unless they\u2019re actively exposed to it,\u201d Durieux says.<\/p>\n

As he develops biodiversity projects, Durieux has noticed a data bias. There\u2019s often stronger data on birds than insects, one reason being birds are easier to spot and photograph. If that bias exists in the research world, it\u2019s even more likely to exist among the general population, Durieux says.<\/p>\n

other people are involved with the identification process. Other people might be using that observation later for research,\u201d they explain.

They spent an hour doing a nature scavenger hunt, working in small groups. The class traveled off campus to local natural areas like Boyd Hill<\/a>, where they were exposed to other ecosystems and nocturnal animals during night excursions. On lab days, students looked at their collections under microscopes.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe overarching word would be insightful,\u201d says Marsh Wraithmell, a first-year student in the class from Tallahassee, Florida, planning to study biology<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The course has helped Marsh become more observant. During the Boyd Hill trip, the class stopped in a sunflower field near the water. Marsh turned their attention to a nearby species of small stature: a praying mantis. It was resting on a flower.<\/p>\n

If she\u2019d been walking faster and not inspecting the environment, Marsh says she wouldn\u2019t have noticed as much as she did.<\/p>\n

Marsh is a self-described \u201cwild person,\u201d being referred to as the \u201cwasp kid\u201d in high school. A Hunter\u2019s Little Paper Wasp tattoo adorns their leg. Particularly chameleons.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m now the chameleon kid. And people are just, like, \u2018hey, you\u2019re the chameleon person, right? Can I go look for chameleons with you?\u201d Marsh says.<\/p>\n

Regardless of what students are interested in, Durieux wants to offer an opportunity to go down the rabbit hole. If students want to deepen their knowledge about insects, they can do that. If they prefer a general overview of biodiversity and familiarizing themselves with the campus, that can be the student\u2019s goal.<\/p>\n

On one hand, the class learned the importance of biodiversity and the relevance of overlooked species. On the other hand, Durieux has introduced them to the history of Eckerd\u2019s land, both natural and artificial. The course isn\u2019t solely nature-oriented or history-oriented.<\/p>\n
