The event drew students, faculty, and staff, and more than 70 student-athletes staffed the course, cheering and handing out water.

Although the Athletics Department founded the event in 2023, a second edition in 2024 was canceled by Hurricane Helene and Hurricane Milton. The event stayed on hiatus in 2025, but returned successfully this fall. Amanda Green ’16, assistant athletic director for internal operations and senior woman administrator, highlighted the desire to share the event with the entire campus community.

and encouraging other participants to write encouraging messages and the names of friends and loved ones whose mental health battles inspire them on his body in marker. He also noted his appreciation for barefoot culture at Eckerd, running the 5K without shoes.

Executive Director of Counseling, Health and Advocacy Services Mindy Anthony Spolski, who joined the College this summer, worked with Green and Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Medicine Sarah Duren to organize the event. In addition to noting the many resources available to the Eckerd College community in mental health, she also explained why these resources matter so much on a college campus.

“Between the ages of 18 and 25 is when most people have their first depressive episode, their first anxiety episode, or people disclose some kind of past trauma or abuse,” Spolski said. “Most traditional college students are between the ages of 18 and 25, so it makes sense on a college campus that you would see more mental health, and contributing to that is being away from family and friends, making adjustments, and academic pressures.”

Spolski also noted that the number of students who travel far from home to attend Eckerd makes robust mental health support from the College especially important. The student body comes from 48 states, more than 30 countries, and additional U.S. territories, and approximately 80% come from outside Florida.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type=”full_width_content” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” column_direction=”default” column_direction_tablet=”default” column_direction_phone=”default” scene_position=”center” top_padding=”2%” bottom_padding=”2%” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” row_border_radius=”none” row_border_radius_applies=”bg” row_position_desktop=”default” row_position_tablet=”inherit” row_position_phone=”inherit” overflow=”visible” advanced_gradient_angle=”0″ overlay_strength=”0.3″ gradient_direction=”left_to_right” shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none” shape_type=”” gradient_type=”default”][vc_column column_padding=”padding-2-percent” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”top” flex_gap_desktop=”10px” column_element_direction_desktop=”default” column_element_spacing=”default” desktop_text_alignment=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_backdrop_filter=”none” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” column_position=”default” max_width_alignment_desktop=”default” max_width_alignment_tablet=”inherit” max_width_alignment_phone=”inherit” gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”1/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” animation_type=”default” bg_image_animation=”none” border_type=”simple” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” column_padding_type=”default” gradient_type=”default”][image_with_animation image_url=”21169″ image_size=”full” max_width=”100%” max_width_mobile=”default” animation_type=”entrance” animation=”None” animation_movement_type=”transform_y” hover_animation=”none” alignment=”” img_link_large=”yes” border_radius=”none” box_shadow=”none” image_loading=”default”][divider line_type=”No Line” custom_height=”16″][vc_column_text css=”” text_direction=”default”]Amanda Green ’16 (left) and Mindy Spolski award prizes that were donated for the event to several lucky participants. [/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type=”full_width_content” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” column_direction=”default” column_direction_tablet=”default” column_direction_phone=”default” scene_position=”center” top_padding=”32″ text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” row_border_radius=”none” row_border_radius_applies=”bg” row_position_desktop=”default” row_position_tablet=”inherit” row_position_phone=”inherit” overflow=”visible” advanced_gradient_angle=”0″ overlay_strength=”0.3″ gradient_direction=”left_to_right” shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none” shape_type=”” gradient_type=”default”][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”right” flex_gap_desktop=”10px” column_element_direction_desktop=”default” column_element_spacing=”default” desktop_text_alignment=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_backdrop_filter=”none” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” column_position=”default” max_width_alignment_desktop=”default” max_width_alignment_tablet=”inherit” max_width_alignment_phone=”inherit” gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”1/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” animation_type=”default” bg_image_animation=”none” border_type=”simple” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” column_padding_type=”default” gradient_type=”default”][vc_column_text css=”” text_direction=”default”]Even students who didn’t run learned more about mental health support available on campus. Spolski was pleased with the turnout and sees potential for it to grow in the future.

“We talked about opening it up to the wider community of St. Pete, but decided for this first time back, let’s focus on our students and our campus community, and we had such a great turnout,” Spolski said.
