Lacchimine is from Muakut, Nepal—one of the areas severely affected by the floods. While his immediate family and relatives are safe, neighbors, other relatives, friends, and community members were not as fortunate. Reports include more than 1,400 deaths, thousands missing, and 13,000 people rescued in an ongoing operation from the initial event two months ago. Flower shared her research about the events that led to this devastation.

The peaks of the Himalayas are not as sturdy as one may think. In fact, they are shattered bedrock “glued together by ice-filled joints intermixed with permafrost,” Flower explained. As a result of the increased temperatures caused by greenhouse gases, the ice-filled joints thinned, which weakened and increased the gaps of the shattered bedrock, causing the collapse of melting ice, rock, and other debris—plummeting 6,000 feet down. The belief is that this landslide then created a dam, allowing water to build and eventually burst and flood the river. [/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type=”full_width_content” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” column_direction=”default” column_direction_tablet=”default” column_direction_phone=”default” scene_position=”center” top_padding=”2%” bottom_padding=”2%” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” row_border_radius=”none” row_border_radius_applies=”bg” row_position_desktop=”default” row_position_tablet=”inherit” row_position_phone=”inherit” overflow=”visible” advanced_gradient_angle=”0″ overlay_strength=”0.3″ gradient_direction=”left_to_right” shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none” shape_type=”” gradient_type=”default”][vc_column column_padding=”padding-2-percent” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”top” flex_gap_desktop=”10px” column_element_direction_desktop=”default” column_element_spacing=”default” desktop_text_alignment=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_backdrop_filter=”none” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” column_position=”default” max_width_alignment_desktop=”default” max_width_alignment_tablet=”inherit” max_width_alignment_phone=”inherit” gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”1/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” animation_type=”default” bg_image_animation=”none” border_type=”simple” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” column_padding_type=”default” gradient_type=”default”][image_with_animation image_url=”21216″ image_size=”full” max_width=”100%” max_width_mobile=”default” animation_type=”entrance” animation=”None” animation_movement_type=”transform_y” hover_animation=”none” alignment=”” img_link_large=”yes” border_radius=”none” box_shadow=”none” image_loading=”default”][divider line_type=”No Line” custom_height=”16″][vc_column_text css=”” text_direction=”default”]Eckerd students participated in an candlelight vigil to show solidarity with those suffering from the devastation in Nepal.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type=”full_width_content” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” column_direction=”default” column_direction_tablet=”default” column_direction_phone=”default” scene_position=”center” top_padding=”32″ text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” row_border_radius=”none” row_border_radius_applies=”bg” row_position_desktop=”default” row_position_tablet=”inherit” row_position_phone=”inherit” overflow=”visible” advanced_gradient_angle=”0″ overlay_strength=”0.3″ gradient_direction=”left_to_right” shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none” shape_type=”” gradient_type=”default”][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”right” flex_gap_desktop=”10px” column_element_direction_desktop=”default” column_element_spacing=”default” desktop_text_alignment=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_backdrop_filter=”none” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” column_position=”default” max_width_alignment_desktop=”default” max_width_alignment_tablet=”inherit” max_width_alignment_phone=”inherit” gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”1/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” animation_type=”default” bg_image_animation=”none” border_type=”simple” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” column_padding_type=”default” gradient_type=”default”][vc_column_text css=”” text_direction=”default”]Flower noted two items: the first is Nepal is a small country of mult-dimensional factors. Meaning, Nepal has a very low contribution to greenhouse gasses, a very low GDP, but is highly vulnerable to the effects of climate change, and possesses a low readiness to respond to the impacts of climate change. Second, for countries like Nepal, the term climate justice is emphasized. Like the other panelists, Flower explained, “Climate justice asks who caused it, who suffers, who pays, and who decides.”

What would climate justice look like applied to countries like Nepal, who suffer from the effects of other countries ‘ contributions to greenhouse gases?

Flower proposed climate reparations to shift the dominant paradigm of reliance on charities or donations. She argued that wealthy countries must take responsibility for their contributions to these environmental impacts. She elaborated that reparations from historical global emitters (like the United States) would enable vulnerable countries like Nepal to have the funds to recover and establish preventive systems for climate readiness.

“With each increment of warming, there’s much more risk of these catastrophic events,” Flower concludes.

Among the many questions, a senior physics student from Apex, North Carolina, Mary Ellen Young had asked:“You [Flower] had said that they think this was caused by the dam building up water, and it could have happened sort of like days in advance … Is there a way to like relieve some of the water pressure slowly so that it could have caused less property damage as well?”

Flower answered, “I think that would be something to do research on. But the first priority would simply be knowing that it’s happening and getting people out of harm’s way.”

After the last of the questions had been answered, the attendees were invited to the commemorative candle lighting ceremony with the Director of the Center for Spiritual Life and Chaplain Rev.
