David E. Irwin\u2019s clarinet music often soared, lifting audiences with every note, according to his colleagues.<\/h3>\n[\/vc_column_text][divider line_type=”No Line” custom_height=”24″][image_with_animation image_url=”2495″ alignment=”” animation=”Fade In” box_shadow=”none” max_width=”100%”][vc_column_text]Before his passing in the spring of 2016, Eckerd College Professor David Irwin conducted many ensemble\u00a0performances.<\/em>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” overlay_strength=”0.3″][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_shadow=”none” width=”1\/1″ tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid”][vc_column_text]In his honor, Eckerd College faculty and students will perform a bird-inspired concert at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 9, in Roberts Music Center 104. <\/span><\/p>\n

Taking Flight: In Memoriam\u2014David Irwin<\/span><\/i> will feature Olivier Messiaen\u2019s \u201cAbyss of the Birds\u201d<\/span> and Astor Piazzolla\u2019s \u201c<\/span>Resurrecci\u00f3n del Angel,\u201d<\/span> both featuring clarinetist Stacey McColley; and Albert Roussel\u2019s \u201c<\/span>Rossignol\u201d with soprano Dawne Eubanks and flutist Barbara Prescott. <\/span><\/p>\n

Irwin, who succumbed to cancer last spring, helped plan the concert and had hoped to perform in it himself. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cDavid Irwin was one of the finest musicians we ever met or worked with. His clarinet playing was nothing short of sublime, especially when it came to performing Brahms,\u201d said Joan Epstein, the music discipline coordinator and a music professor at Eckerd College. \u201cHis jazz skills on clarinet, bass clarinet and saxophone were prodigious as well.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Irwin spent 25 years at the College teaching clarinet, coordinating instrumental music and applied music programs, and directing the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute New Horizons adult beginning band, now the New Horizons Band of Gulfport. He was a native of Atlanta and a graduate of Florida State University and Yale University School of Music.<\/span><\/p>\n

All the music on Sunday\u2019s program references bird attributes, specifically flight and its spiritual connotations. Cellist Fred Gratta will be featured on <\/span>Pablo Casals\u2019s \u201cSong of the Birds\u201d with pianist Brent Douglas and strings. Epstein will perform Charles Ives\u2019s \u201cWhere the Eagle\u201d on trumpet, and her own composition \u201cEagles\u201d will be performed by Eubanks, McColley and Prescott. Also on the program are an arrangement of \u201cFeed the Birds\u201d for flute choir and several songs from the popular and jazz repertoire performed by Eckerd\u2019s top student vocalists with Brent Douglas or a faculty-student jazz combo. \u201cOver the Rainbow,\u201d \u201cSkylark,\u201d \u201cGreen Finch and Linnet Bird,\u201d and \u201cBlackbird\u201d are also among the offerings.<\/span><\/p>\n
