Valenziano and Powell entered the idea in the 2017 Frank and Ellen Daveler Entrepreneurship competition at the University of South Florida and were selected as $5,000 grand-prize winners out of 90 applicants from around the state.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe hope to get Eckerd and other schools to buy into this idea, and continue working on the business,\u201d said Valenziano, a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eckerd.edu\/management\/mgt-major\/\">management<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eckerd.edu\/economics\/\">economics<\/a>\u00a0major from Hummelstown, Pa. \u201cWe\u2019re looking at the $5,000 as an investment in the future [of Simply Slide].\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Powell, an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eckerd.edu\/eckerd-environmental-studies\">environmental studies<\/a> major from Warminster, Pa., had never had any business or entrepreneurial experience prior to this contest. His expertise in making things comes from EC Maker Space, a campus club of students who create products and art through 3D printing, blacksmithing, woodwork, sewing and other crafts. Powell, an executive board member of the club, helped create a prototype made of recycled plastic, metal pipe, wood and felt erasers. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was really amazing because out of all the other teams [at the Daveler] we were the only ones with a product. Everyone else had an app,\u201d Powell said. [\/vc_column_text][divider line_type=&#8221;No Line&#8221; custom_height=&#8221;24&#8243;][image_with_animation image_url=&#8221;2711&#8243; alignment=&#8221;&#8221; animation=&#8221;Fade In&#8221; box_shadow=&#8221;none&#8221; max_width=&#8221;100%&#8221;][vc_column_text]<em>Testing their prototype<\/em>[\/vc_column_text][divider line_type=&#8221;No Line&#8221; custom_height=&#8221;24&#8243;][vc_column_text]The competition guidelines required that students in Florida submit a written proposal, and then the most intriguing applications were selected to pitch their product to a panel of judges on April 8. Some\u00a0pitches\u00a0were awarded $2,500, but only a few\u00a0were given\u00a0additional prize money. <\/p>\n<p>After the winners were announced, the contest paired up its 12\u00a0winners\u00a0with a mentor to help them through the process of turning their pitches into reality. Powell and Valenziano\u00a0also have connected with a patent attorney. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs an environmental studies major, I never thought about business things, but that\u2019s what\u2019s great about environmental studies at Eckerd,\u201d Powell said. \u201cIt\u2019s so broad that it is applicable to many fields\u2014things that people think you might avoid.
