Joe Miseyka \u201917 held his pet tortoise still as Eckerd College President Don Eastman shook the animal\u2019s leg and presented him with a certificate of appreciation.<\/h3>\n[\/vc_column_text][divider line_type=”No Line” custom_height=”24″][image_with_animation image_url=”2731″ alignment=”” animation=”Fade In” box_shadow=”none” max_width=”100%”][vc_column_text]Joe Miseyka ’17 and his “graduating” pet tortoise, Matt.<\/em>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” overlay_strength=”0.3″][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_shadow=”none” width=”1\/1″ tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid”][vc_column_text]The tortoise, Matt Miseyka, was one of 27 pets honored at the Fifth Annual Eckerd College Pet Graduation in Fox Hall on May 9.<\/p>\n

Every year, the College holds a ceremony for the pets of graduating seniors. Species represented in the Pet Class of 2017 include 10 dogs, nine cats, three rats, a snake, a guinea pig, a desert tortoise, a parakeet and a hedgehog.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am really excited for the ceremony,\u201d said Joe, a psychology major from Barrington, Ill. \u201cIt\u2019s just something I thought would be fun for him.\u201d<\/p>\n

As Matt\u2019s name was called, Joe carried him up to cross the stage to the raucous cheers of students, faculty and staff familiar with the tortoise. This year\u2019s \u201cpet graduates\u201d received a certificate, an Eckerd College ID tag and a cap-and-gown photo shoot with their owner and the president.<\/p>\n[\/vc_column_text][divider line_type=”No Line” custom_height=”32″][image_with_animation image_url=”2736″ alignment=”” animation=”Fade In” box_shadow=”none” max_width=”100%”][vc_column_text]Opie Sarvet licks Eckerd College President Donald Eastman at pet graduation on May 9. \u201cThis really is one of my favorite events at Eckerd College,\u201d said Eastman. \u201c[This event] tells you more about what sort of place this is than any other.\u201d<\/p>\n

As the first school in the nation to accept on-campus pets, Eckerd shows a true commitment to honoring the animals that support our students, which has extended to this annual ceremony. Vice President for Student Life and Dean of Students James Annarelli read the pet names while President Eastman presented the certificates and then had his photo taken with each pet and owner at the ceremony.<\/p>\n

More than 190 furred, feathered and scaled companions have graduated from Eckerd since the school began holding a separate ceremony in 2013. Eckerd College students can live in campus housing with one animal<\/a> (dogs under 40 pounds, cats, rabbits, ferrets, ducks and chinchillas) or two small pets (fish, hamsters, gerbils, amphibians, nonvenomous reptiles under four feet long and small birds).[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row]\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
