Chan was one of four HKBU students accepted to take part in the Eckerd College Research Exchange Program. The students applied and were selected through their home university and were offered complimentary lodging and the chance to do hands-on field research with Krediet; Marine Science and Geosciences Professor Gregg Brooks<\/a>, Ph.D.; and Associate Biology\/Marine Science Professor and Dolphin Project<\/a> Coordinator Shannon Gowans<\/a>, Ph.D.<\/p>\n

Koi Yang, Wing Yi Lo and Chi Wing Chung all jumped at the chance to make their first trip to the United States to take part in field research.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was eye-opening and really valuable to be able to do research and see the wild animals up close,\u201d said Lo, 21, a senior environmental science student from Hong Kong. \u201cThere are no dolphins when we go on research field trips in Hong Kong, just in the theme parks.\u201d<\/p>\n

Yang wanted to join his colleagues on the Dolphin Research Project this summer but found himself very satisfied with studying Cuban core sediment samples<\/a> that Brooks had acquired on a research cruise to the island nation in May.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn my field, I want to deal with pollution. Clifford Lezark \u201918, a marine science and computer science<\/a> major from Warren, R.I., went to HKBU with Duncan and three other students in 2016.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe worked mainly with doctoral candidates and it was mind-blowing,\u201d Lezark said. \u201cIt was intimidating at first, but we found out we knew a lot of the same things.\u201d<\/p>\n

Working abroad gave Lezark a new perspective and a passion to continue international research and education. \u201cI would definitely do it again,\u201d he said. \u201cThe experience of working abroad is invaluable.\u201d<\/p>\n

The research exchange began as a piece of Eckerd\u2019s grant-funded Asia and the Environment Initiative<\/a>. Duncan said professors on both continents are working diligently to keep the exchange going now that the grant is ending.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe relationships we develop with the students and professors [at HKBU] continue on past the time we spend working together in labs. These friendships will potentially become the colleagues we work alongside in the future,\u201d Duncan said. \u201cAnd their similar professional interests will have begun by participating in this program.\u201d[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row]\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
