The certificate of recognition for the <a href=\"\/academics\/honor-societies\/\">College\u2019s chapter<\/a>, called the Zeta Chapter of Florida, came with a $500 award to use for future programming.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have sponsored PBK Visiting Scholars for the past four years, a rare honor since all the chapters must request this activity and the process is quite competitive,\u201d said Carolyn Johnston, our new chapter president and the <a href=\"\/wiesel\/\">Elie Wiesel<\/a> Professor of Humane Letters and professor of <a href=\"\/history\/\">history<\/a> and American studies at Eckerd College. \u201cLast year, [Indiana University Distinguished Photography] Professor Osamu James Nakagawa was our distinguished visiting PBK speaker.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The national PBK leadership also recognized the exceptionally close relationship Eckerd\u2019s chapter has to two area alumni chapters, Tampa Bay and Manatee\/Sarasota, Johnston explained.<\/p>\n<p>Having a PBK chapter \u201cis, as [<a href=\"\/president\/\">Eckerd College President<\/a>] Don [Eastman] has said, \u2018the Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval on our academic program.\u2019 It is difficult to get a chapter, especially for a school as young as ours,\u201d said Marjorie Sanfilippo, associate dean of faculty, executive director of Eckerd\u2019s <a href=\"\/excellence\/\">Center for Academic Excellence<\/a> and our Zeta Chapter historian.
