Scientists, policy makers and business leaders will gather at Fox Hall on Monday, Oct. 6, for an important Climate Science and Solutions Summit.<\/p>\n
This summit is a result of the meeting that five scientists had with Gov. Rick Scott in August. Last week, more than 40 scientists sent an open letter to policy makers calling for a climate change solutions summit.<\/p>\n
Attendees at the Oct. 6 summit at Eckerd College will hear about successful initiatives that are addressing climate change and creating jobs. The summit will bring together business leaders, lawmakers and the public to talk about job creation opportunities in the new low-carbon economy.<\/p>\n
The summit, which is free and open to the public, is hosted by Eckerd College in partnership with the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy and the Natural Resources Defense Council. It will run from 1:30 p.m.to 5 p.m.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is crucial for lawmakers to consider science when making important policy decisions,\u201d said David Hastings, Ph.D., Eckerd College professor of marine science and one of the scientists who met with the governor. \u201cTheir expertise regarding the current and future threats to Florida is vital.\u201d<\/p>\n
In last week\u2019s open letter to all Florida policymakers, the scientists called for an action plan: \u201cKey to that is detailed information regarding the specific climate change impacts already affecting Florida so optimal plans for mitigating future impacts may be formulated, while simultaneously preparing Florida’s communities and businesses for the changes already underway, and almost certain to accelerate in coming years.\u201d<\/p>\n
