With the help of a $550,000 grant from the Henry R. Luce Foundation, Eckerd College Associate Professor of Religious Studies Amy Langenberg<\/a>, Ph.D., and a cohort of scholars will spend the next five years delving into the issues surrounding the alarming phenomenon of sexual abuse in religious communities.<\/h3>\n[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row type=”full_width_content” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” column_direction=”default” column_direction_tablet=”default” column_direction_phone=”default” scene_position=”center” top_padding=”32″ text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” row_border_radius=”none” row_border_radius_applies=”bg” overflow=”visible” overlay_strength=”0.3″ gradient_direction=”left_to_right” shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none” shape_type=””][vc_column column_padding=”padding-2-percent” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”right” column_element_direction_desktop=”default” column_element_spacing=”default” desktop_text_alignment=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_backdrop_filter=”none” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” column_position=”default” gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”2\/3″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” animation_type=”default” bg_image_animation=”none” border_type=”simple” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” column_padding_type=”default” gradient_type=”default”][vc_column_text]The Religion and Sexual Abuse Project is one of 31 new grantees selected by the Luce Foundation<\/a>, which awarded just over $14 million in support of five program areas designed to enrich \u201cpublic discourse by supporting innovative scholarship, leadership development and collaboration across geographic, disciplinary and ideological boundaries,\u201d according to the Foundation.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis award recognizes the important work that Dr. Langenberg and her colleagues are doing,\u201d said Eckerd\u2019s Director of Grant Development Anna Ruth. \u201cThis project would be difficult to complete without this dedicated funding.\u201d<\/p>\n

The official proposal offered to take multiple avenues to engage the public \u201cthrough conferences, public events, publications and a dedicated website, to facilitate new perspectives that will enrich public understandings of these issues beyond sensationalized media reports. Her research languages include Sanskrit, P\u0101li, and classical Tibetan. \u201cI am primarily responsible for the historical context of institutions, doctrines, and sexual ethics in American Buddhism, and Ann [Gleig] is primarily responsible for ethnographic research on specific cases of abuse. This is truly a collaborative project, however, and we will be working together closely on all aspects of the research\u201d said Langenberg.<\/p>\n

Media attention has been laser-focused on the abuses of the Catholic Church, but recent revelations about American Buddhism prove the issue of sexual abuse is prevalent across faith traditions. The foundational research question Langenberg and Gleig share is: How do sexual abuse and misconduct crises impact practitioners’ understandings of Buddhism, and what non-Buddhist discourses such as psychotherapy and feminism do practitioners also draw on to make sense of them.<\/p>\n

Langenberg said she and Gleig will travel throughout the project to affected communities to complete the book\u2019s three case studies. After publication, they\u2019ll engage in panels and other forums to bring their research to the masses.<\/p>\n

She and Gleig each will receive about $20,000 to complete their shared research project. Langenberg will involve her Eckerd students through her Fall Semester 2019 course, Buddhism and Sexuality. She also will enlist aid from her Ford Apprentice Scholar, Jake Duggan, a junior psychology<\/a> student from Concord, Massachusetts.<\/p>\n
