The courses, which will end July 16, are open to all students (new or returning), recent graduates, faculty and staff\u2014but capacity is limited. Lectures will be posted on YouTube for anyone to watch following the live presentations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe current crisis has emphasized how much we at Eckerd are a community and how much we rely on each other to do the jobs that we do. Eckerd is thriving amid the crisis because of our faith in each other, in our institution and in our shared mission,\u201d said <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eckerd.edu\/ancient-studies\/faculty\/vincent\/\">Heather Vincent, Ph.D.<\/a>, associate dean for general education, associate professor of classics and the seminar\u2019s architect. \u201cWe hope that the seminar will exemplify how an education that spans the sciences, social sciences, humanities and arts provides the kind of critically informed perspective that is often lacking in our contemporary political discourse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Registration opened in early May and continues to draw a wide cross section of community members, including 40 admitted students (those who have not officially started classes at Eckerd), according to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eckerd.edu\/admissions\/sullivan\/\">Vice President for Enrollment Management John Sullivan<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Each week will showcase a new lecturer and theme. Gliem\u2019s lecture, Disease and Art History, will be held on June 23. \u201cAs of now, my plan is to introduce and frame my topic by discussing art historian Millard Meiss\u2019s seminal book <em>Painting in Florence<\/em> and <em>Siena after the Black Death<\/em> (Princeton, 1951) and then highlight key artworks and artists from later periods with particular attention paid to art made in response to the 1918 Spanish flu pandemic and the AIDS crisis of the 1980s,\u201d he explained. \u201cI will probably end with some discussion of how the COVID-19 pandemic is being treated by contemporary artists and speculate how it may shape art to come.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.eckerd.edu\/chemistry\/faculty\/young-erdos\/\">Crystal Young-Erdos, Ph.D.<\/a>, assistant professor of <a href=\"\/chemistry\/\">chemistry and biochemistry<\/a>, will co-lead a presentation on The Science of the Virus and Its Pathology with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eckerd.edu\/biology\/faculty\/flaherty\/\">Associate Professor of Biology Denise Flaherty, Ph.D.<\/a> on June 16.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row
