Over four years of research in what many consider to be the pristine marine habitats of Cuba, Visiting Assistant Professor of Marine Science Jorge Angulo-Valdes, Ph.D.<\/a>, discovered that his country\u2019s coastal sharks were just as threatened as those in other parts of the world.<\/h3>\n[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row type=”full_width_content” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” column_direction=”default” column_direction_tablet=”default” column_direction_phone=”default” scene_position=”center” top_padding=”32″ text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” row_border_radius=”none” row_border_radius_applies=”bg” overlay_strength=”0.3″ gradient_direction=”left_to_right” shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none” shape_type=””][vc_column column_padding=”padding-10-percent” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”right” column_element_spacing=”default” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”2\/3″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” bg_image_animation=”none” border_type=”simple” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid”][vc_column_text]\u201cWe were surprised. Even though Cuba is fairly well preserved, it has this reputation that this is [a marine] paradise\u2014that is wrong information,\u201d Angulo-Valdes explained. \u201cThere is a strong fishery effect and overfishing. Despite our ecosystems and habitat health, our sharks are as threatened as other regions\u2019. Something needs to be done.\u201d<\/p>\n

Along with comparison data from co-authors in 55 countries using the same methodology, Angulo-Valdes\u2019s findings were presented in \u201cGlobal status and conservation potential of reef sharks,\u201d published in the peer-reviewed journal Nature<\/em> in July<\/a>. Among the paper\u2019s co-authors is Eckerd marine science<\/a> alumnus Nishan Perera \u201901, co-founder of Blue Resources Trust in Sri Lanka.<\/p>\n

When you remove a top predator from an ecosystem, everything suffers. Top predators act as the guards and remove those individuals from the population that are not suited to it,\u201d he emphasized.<\/p>\n

Study of coastal ecosystems must continue beyond this project, Angulo-Valdes said, so humans can better understand the causes of shark depletion. Sharks already know what to do. They have been here way before us. He joined Eckerd\u2019s faculty as a visiting scholar in 2018.<\/p>\n

Going into his third year of teaching at Eckerd, Angulo-Valdes said international collaborations on population study will be critical in improving conditions and outcomes for key species in the natural world. He plans to continue his work studying bonefish abundance in Florida versus his native Cuba. Florida has strict sport fishing regulations and penalties in place to protect bonefish, and yet, the species is still disappearing in and around the state.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe suspect it may be the habitat quality,\u201d he added. \u201cLand-based agriculture may have eroded the habitat over time.\u201d<\/p>\n

Once travel restrictions are lifted, he\u2019ll prepare to return to taking scores of Eckerd students to Cuba to study its habitats and species. \u201cEckerd\u2019s students are some of the best students I\u2019ve ever worked with,\u201d he said. \u201cThey are all very interested and willing to work.
