bg_image_animation=&#8221;none&#8221;][vc_column_text]\n<h3>It was just a five-minute segment in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalgeographic.com\/tv\/shows\/secrets-of-the-zoo-tampa\/episode-guide\/season-02\/episode-05-new-rhino-on-the-block\/vdka19583814\">National Geographic show <em>Secrets of the Zoo<\/em><\/a>, but Professor of Psychology and Animal Studies Lauren Highfill, Ph.D., beamed when she saw the footage.<\/h3>\n[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row type=&#8221;full_width_content&#8221; bg_image_animation=&#8221;none&#8221;][vc_column_text]Keepers at <a href=\"https:\/\/zootampa.org\">ZooTampa at Lowry Park<\/a> highlighted Highfill\u2019s three-year study of elephant cooperation by demonstrating a trial between two of the zoo\u2019s six African elephants, adult female Matjeka and adolescent Mpumi. Both animals were offered a rope to pull a sled. If they pulled at the same time and similar speed, the sled would move forward and deliver a treat of their favorite fruits and vegetables. If they didn\u2019t match their timing, the rope would come undone and they would get nothing at all. On the first trial, Matjeka and Mpumi succeeded eight out of 10 times, an improvement of 10% over their last attempt. The second time, they improved to 10 out of 10.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m very happy that it was featured on <em>Secrets of the Zoo<\/em>,\u201d Highfill said. \u201cLetting the zoo guests see this research happening could help them understand the reason the animals are endangered or threatened in their environments. The more people understand, the more people tend to want to care for them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eckerd.edu\/psychology\/faculty\/highfill\/\">Highfill<\/a> has worked on several other studies at ZooTampa, including a different cognitive study involving elephants in the past. During a presentation at a conference, zoo colleagues were intrigued with Highfill\u2019s assertion that cognitive research, especially about cooperation, is actually good for the large animals. The zoo administrators joined forces with the <a href=\"https:\/\/asrc.eckerd.edu\">Animal Studies Research Collaborative at Eckerd College<\/a>, a campus lab run by Highfill and colleague <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eckerd.edu\/animal-studies\/faculty\/frick\/\">Assistant Professor of Animal Studies Erin Frick<\/a>, and the elephant cooperation study was born.<\/p>\n<p>Student researchers watch each two- to three-minute trial video at least 10 times to see all the nuances and gather information, said Maddie Ketner, a junior <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eckerd.edu\/animal-studies\/\">animal studies<\/a> and <a href=\"\/psychology\/\">psychology<\/a> student from Greensboro, North Carolina.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is definitely what I am meant to be doing because I have no problem with watching 20 hours of video of elephants,\u201d Maddie laughed.
