The fall before the world shut down for the COVID-19 pandemic, Eckerd College\u2019s Associate Professor of Religious Studies Amy Langenberg, Ph.D.<\/a>, and her research partner, University of Central Florida\u2019s Associate Professor of Religion and Cultural Studies, Ann Gleig, Ph.D., had big plans to travel the country researching sexual abuse in contemporary North American Buddhism.<\/h3>\n[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row type=”full_width_content” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” column_direction=”default” column_direction_tablet=”default” column_direction_phone=”default” scene_position=”center” top_padding=”32″ text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” row_border_radius=”none” row_border_radius_applies=”bg” overlay_strength=”0.3″ gradient_direction=”left_to_right” shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none” shape_type=””][vc_column column_padding=”padding-2-percent” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”right” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”1\/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column_text]Funded as a part of a larger $550,000 Religion and Sexual Abuse Project through the Henry Luce Foundation\u2019s Religion and Theology Program<\/a>, the team had to pivot quickly when 2020 proved to be much different than they had planned.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe ended up doing a lot of Zoom interviews over the course of the year and talked to over 60 people\u2014including the accused perpetrator\u2014for our first case study: self-styled bad boy of Buddhism, Noah Levine of Los Angeles\u2019s Against the Stream Buddhist Meditation Society,\u201d Langenberg said.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row type=”full_width_content” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” column_direction=”default” column_direction_tablet=”default” column_direction_phone=”default” scene_position=”center” top_padding=”32″ text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” row_border_radius=”none” row_border_radius_applies=”bg” overlay_strength=”0.3″ gradient_direction=”left_to_right” shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none” shape_type=””][vc_column column_padding=”padding-2-percent” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” el_class=”lg_text” gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”1\/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column_text]The rich information gleaned from this year’s intensive work led to three public scholarship publications including pieces in the Buddhist review Tricycle<\/a><\/em>, the sexual abuse and religion blog The Shiloh Project<\/a><\/em>, and an appearance on the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation\u2019s Tapestry with Mary Hynes<\/a>.<\/em><\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row type=”full_width_content” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” column_direction=”default” column_direction_tablet=”default” column_direction_phone=”default” scene_position=”center” top_padding=”32″ text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” row_border_radius=”none” row_border_radius_applies=”bg” overlay_strength=”0.3″ gradient_direction=”left_to_right” shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none” shape_type=””][vc_column column_padding=”padding-2-percent” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”right” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”1\/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column_text]Levine\u2019s accusers were unnamed in public documents, and Langenberg and Gleig were unable to secure interviews with them during the course of their research. Langenberg said it didn\u2019t deter them from trying to center the voices and experiences of those survivors when compiling the information they were allowed to collect.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne of the things we have come to terms with, or learned, is it is very easy to talk about perpetrators,\u201d Langenberg admitted. \u201cWe can talk about the breakdown of the communities, but so much focus on community response can lend itself to turning away from what survivors experienced. Ann and I are intent on viewing this project through the lens of intersectional feminism. We are holding space for survivors, so that a fuller picture of what it is like to experience trauma in these communities becomes available.\u201d<\/p>\n

Langenberg also received a $6,000 National Endowment for the Humanities<\/a> (NEH) Summer Stipend grant to write two chapters of her joint book with Gleig titled Abuse, Sex, and the Sangha<\/em>, which will be published by the Yale University Press. The chapters focused on the historical, doctrinal, and institutional background of sexual violation in Classical Buddhism.<\/span> \u201cFor the last five years, the NEH program has had a 9.8% funding rate, so I was pretty proud to be awarded one,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n

This summer, Langenberg and Gleig will pivot to researching their second case study while also participating in more public scholarship through a panel series hosted by Buddhist Current<\/em>s<\/a>, a blog focused on social engagement in Buddhism.<\/p>\n

\u201cPublic scholarship on topics like this is important because we need to have these conversations with communities and individuals that are affected,\u201d Langenberg said.[\/vc_column_text][divider line_type=”No Line” custom_height=”32″][vc_column_text]\n
