The faculty crew also measured water salinity, temperature, pH and dissolved oxygen at different water depths. We are also working with our colleagues at USF, particularly Steve Murawski, who will provide fish tissue for radioisotope measurements. The Tampa Bay Estuary Program provided <a href=\"\/marinescience\/faculty\/siuda\/\">Assistant Professor of Marine Science Amy Siuda<\/a> and <a href=\"\/marinescience\/faculty\/gowans\/\">Professor of Marine Science and Biology Shannon Gowans<\/a> with samples from the seagrass beds near Piney Point to investigate if there is an uptick in microplastic pollution in the bay. Students will process the six buckets of samples in this ongoing effort in coordination with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epchc.org\/\">Hillsborough County Environmental Protection Commission<\/a>. Gowans said by next week the researchers should have early numbers to know if levels of plastic are elevated because the plastic liner of the retention pond had degraded. \u201cIf levels are not elevated, then it is likely that no further testing will be conducted,\u201d Gowans said.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.noaa.gov\/\">National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration<\/a> (NOAA), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fisheries.noaa.gov\/\">NOAA Marine Fisheries Service<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/sarasotadolphin.org\/\">Sarasota Dolphin Research Program<\/a> are working with the <a href=\"\/dolphin-project\/\">Eckerd College Dolphin Project<\/a> to keep an eye on Tampa Bay\u2019s bottlenose dolphin population.
