The application for the U.S. Department of State\u2019s Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship<\/a> seemed so daunting that Carly Naundorff abandoned it when she was still a sophomore.<\/h3>\n[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row type=”full_width_content” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” column_direction=”default” column_direction_tablet=”default” column_direction_phone=”default” scene_position=”center” top_padding=”32″ text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” row_border_radius=”none” row_border_radius_applies=”bg” overlay_strength=”0.3″ gradient_direction=”left_to_right” shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none” shape_type=””][vc_column column_padding=”padding-2-percent” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”right” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”1\/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column_text]\u201cI decided to apply for the Gilman Scholarship in the fall of 2020 after realizing that ever since high school I\u2019ve always wished to be able to study abroad, yet had never had the money,\u201d said Carly, a senior biology<\/a> and environmental studies<\/a> student from Dingmans Ferry, Pennsylvania. \u201cI thought that this was my last chance before graduating from college.\u201d<\/p>\n

It is really needed funding for many.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cameron came to Eckerd College because of an interest in ethnobotany and applied for the Gilman Scholarship as a way to afford the research abroad opportunities his vocation requires. \u201cI hope to connect with the local [Colombian] community, joining their discussions as a participator rather than an observer. And whenever time permits, I hope to study the local farming, architecture, archaeology, and natural environments,\u201d Cameron explained.<\/p>\n

This year, more than 1,500 undergraduate students became Gilman Scholars when the awards were announced May 18. They represent 467 U.S. colleges and all 50 U.S. states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. These Gilman Scholars will study or intern in 96 countries through the end of 2022.<\/p>\n
