The power of travel to transform is what draws Thandiwe Dinani, Ph.D., to her advocacy for study abroad experiences.<\/h3>\n[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row type=”full_width_content” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” column_direction=”default” column_direction_tablet=”default” column_direction_phone=”default” scene_position=”center” top_padding=”32″ text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” row_border_radius=”none” row_border_radius_applies=”bg” overlay_strength=”0.3″ gradient_direction=”left_to_right” shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none” shape_type=””][vc_column column_padding=”padding-2-percent” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”right” column_element_spacing=”default” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”2\/3″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” bg_image_animation=”none” border_type=”simple” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid”][vc_column_text]\u201cIf students are returning home the same, with\u00a0simply\u00a0an additional\u00a0luggage tag or\u00a0cool selfies\u00a0next to iconic landmarks,\u00a0then\u00a0my work would be\u00a0left unfulfilling,\u201d says Dinani, Eckerd College\u2019s new associate dean of\u00a0global education<\/a>. \u201cThey should return home a different person than when they left, after experiencing new people, places, and perspectives.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dinani joins Eckerd College\u2019s Office of Global Education from Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee, where she served as a director of study abroad before transitioning into the director of global education. She credits her international upbringing for the deep cultural respect she applies to her work.<\/p>\n

Her family had lived in Germany and Zimbabwe\u00a0during her formative years,\u00a0before settling in Los Angeles.\u00a0Dinani also lived and worked in London after college.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy parents instilled in us \u00a0a sense of curiosity\u2014we learned how to enjoy and find the uniqueness of each place, which helped us to appreciate and adapt to different cultures. She also brings to her work in global education an emphasis on diversity, equity and inclusion. The search committee was impressed by her energy and enthusiasm as well as her depth of knowledge in the field of global education.\u201d<\/p>\n

Formerly known as the Office of International Education, Eckerd College\u2019s Office of Global Education serves the academic program by helping to plan and facilitate faculty-led trips for Winter Term<\/a> and Spring Into Summer<\/a> as well as semesters abroad at the College\u2019s London Study Centre<\/a> and student-selected semester abroad programs around the world. The Study Abroad Program has grown to serve hundreds of students each year\u2014including a record 446 travelers in 2019 under the longtime leadership of retired Director of International Education Diane Ferris \u201986.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row type=”full_width_content” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” column_direction=”default” column_direction_tablet=”default” column_direction_phone=”default” scene_position=”center” top_padding=”32″ text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” row_border_radius=”none” row_border_radius_applies=”bg” overlay_strength=”0.3″ gradient_direction=”left_to_right” shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none” shape_type=””][vc_column column_padding=”padding-2-percent” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”all” column_element_spacing=”default” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” el_class=”lg_text” gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”1\/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” bg_image_animation=”none” border_type=”simple” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid”][vc_column_text]Dinani used to visit 10 to 15 countries a year before coming to Eckerd\u2014averaging 100,000 miles of travel. South Africa remains high on her list of recommended list of countries to visit, along with Barcelona, Spain, and New Zealand, a country she calls a hidden gem. \u201cMost students say they want to go study in Australia, I encourage them to consider New Zealand, and do a weekend visit to Australia\u201d Dinani says. “Getting to see up close the reverence New Zealand has for its indigenous people, the Maori, is really life changing for students. Both English and Maori are taught in primary schools, and meetings are started only after a Maori leader speaks.<\/span> It\u2019s powerful.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Adding Florida to the list of places she has called home was an easy choice for Dinani once she met the Eckerd community and heard about the vision for the future of\u00a0global education. \u201cThe\u00a0intentionality given to transform student perspective is inspiring,\u201d she recalls. \u201cI love that it aligns with my passion for the transformative nature of higher education.\u201d<\/p>\n[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row]\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
