The problems are enormous and affect everyone on the planet. But the number of people who could come up with solutions is not only shrinking, it\u2019s not a reflection of who we are.<\/h3>\n[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row type=”full_width_content” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” column_direction=”default” column_direction_tablet=”default” column_direction_phone=”default” scene_position=”center” top_padding=”32″ text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” row_border_radius=”none” row_border_radius_applies=”bg” overlay_strength=”0.3″ gradient_direction=”left_to_right” shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none” shape_type=””][vc_column column_padding=”padding-2-percent” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”right” column_element_spacing=”default” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”1\/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” bg_image_animation=”none” border_type=”simple” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid”][vc_column_text]The number of global issues related to geoscience\u2014issues such as climate change, severe weather events and contamination of marine systems\u2014has steadily increased over the last several decades, the National Science Foundation<\/a> (NSF) warns.<\/p>\n

But at the same time, there has been a significant decrease in the number of geoscience students at the undergraduate level, and very little diversity.<\/p>\n

Enter Gregg Brooks, professor of marine science and geosciences at Eckerd College<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In an effort to reverse that trend, in August the NSF awarded Eckerd a $389,413 grant written by Brooks and his colleagues with the goal of increasing the number and diversity of students entering the geoscience workforce.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe primary objective,\u2019\u2019 the grant states, \u201cis to integrate ongoing research with new and unique undergraduate courses \u2026 and to enhance pathways for diverse cohorts of undergraduates to thrive in geoscience careers.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

Those new and unique courses at Eckerd will be titled Scientist at Sea (Parts A and B) and will consist of on- and off-campus research, peer mentorship, and networking opportunities. The courses will be integrated with a new College initiative titled Diversifying the Marine Science Pipeline, which will facilitate the recruitment and retention of a more diverse student population interested in pursuing geoscience careers.<\/p>\n

The primary target will be prospective students, first-years and sophomores at Eckerd, and the enticement will be the chance to work on projects directly tied to critical issues such as red tide and oil spills in the Gulf of Mexico.<\/p>\n

It’s not that Eckerd lacks marine science<\/a> students. Nearly 50% of its incoming first-years\u2014about 360 new students this year\u2014are marine science majors. But nearly all of those students eventually find their way to marine biology or a related field. Not geosciences<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Eckerd currently graduates about 10\u201312 marine science geology students and about five geoscience students per year.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re trying to attract some of those marine science students into geoscience,\u2019\u2019 says Brooks, who was the lead researcher for the grant project. \u201cAnd it\u2019s not just a challenge for Eckerd. It\u2019s that way everywhere. The NSF found out that not only are not enough students going into the geosciences, not enough are from underrepresented groups.\u201d<\/p>\n

But if students know they can work on something that could have a meaningful environmental impact, and if they get the experience that could land them a job later on in government or the private sector, they might sign up.<\/p>\n

\u201cOnce they make that link,\u2019\u2019 Brooks says, \u201donce they get excited, then we\u2019ve got them.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

And as the grant states, \u201cIt is well documented that culturally relevant, problem-based research experiences, such as the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, which serves as the foundation of this project<\/a>, can be a very successful recruitment tool.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

They didn\u2019t understand all the different things you can do. Brooks noted that Patrick Schwing \u201906, assistant professor of marine science<\/a>, and Rebekka Larson \u201901, marine science instructor<\/a>, played key roles in writing the grant, which continues a string of awards for the Marine Science Program. Over the past decade, Brooks and his Eckerd marine science colleagues have secured $1.2 million in grant funding for their work.<\/p>\n

The focus now is making geoscience\u2014the study of earth\u2014attractive to a wide and diverse audience.<\/p>\n
