Now that space travel is moving into commercial business, long-term trips seem to be the next frontier.<\/h3>\n[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row type=”full_width_content” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” column_direction=”default” column_direction_tablet=”default” column_direction_phone=”default” scene_position=”center” top_padding=”32″ text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” row_border_radius=”none” row_border_radius_applies=”bg” overlay_strength=”0.3″ gradient_direction=”left_to_right” shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none” shape_type=””][vc_column column_padding=”padding-2-percent” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”right” column_element_spacing=”default” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”1\/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” bg_image_animation=”none” border_type=”simple” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid”][vc_column_text]Eckerd College Associate Professor of Chemistry Greg Felton, Ph.D.<\/a>, looked at his own research into carbon recycling and asked an important question: \u201cCould finding a way to recycle the carbon from human respiration for food or fuel production make space travel more efficient?\u201d<\/p>\n

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration\u2019s (NASA) Florida Space Grant Consortium<\/a> (FSGC) is willing to bet the answer is yes.<\/p>\n

Felton and three students have received a $25,000 FSGC grant to continue his research beginning in January 2022. The United Kingdom native and University of Leicester graduate has been working on this project since joining Eckerd in 2017, when the College awarded him a five-year $35,000 start-up fund. Additional funding will help him continue this work and expand the implications. More than a finished product, the goal of Felton\u2019s carbon recycling research is to refine processes, train future electrochemists and display the breadth of space-related science.<\/p>\n

Anthony \u201cAJ\u201d Gross, a junior biochemistry<\/a> student from Princeton, Minnesota, has been working in Felton\u2019s lab since he met the faculty member at the Chemistry Club table during a club fair his first year at Eckerd. It would take large-scale artificial photosynthesis to turn that carbon dioxide into a carbohydrate ready for reuse.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s more a proof of concept than close to install,\u201d Felton explains. \u201cIf we were able to achieve it, we could do it much more efficiently than plants.\u201d<\/p>\n

So they\u2019ll begin by working to convert carbon dioxide into carbon monoxide and hopefully progress all the way to isolating the carbon.<\/p>\n

In the process of working for Felton, AJ says he\u2019s learned everything he knows about instrumentation in chemistry, including how to operate Felton\u2019s favorite, the 300-MHz NMR spectrometer, a machine that allows researchers to view the molecules in compounds similarly to the way an MRI lets doctors see the inner workings of the human body.<\/p>\n

\u201cI came here to major in marine science<\/a> because I wanted to do coral genetic engineering, but then I found that biochemistry might be a better route to my goal,\u201d AJ says. \u201cBut the work I do for Dr. Felton is inorganic chemistry, and I really love working with metallic compounds. I wouldn\u2019t know that if I hadn\u2019t had this research opportunity.\u201d<\/p>\n

AJ will be joined by Jillian Campbell, Lia Perez and Maya Beck as student researchers on Felton\u2019s grant for the 2022 calendar year.<\/p>\n
